One of Wommack’s most transformative teachings is “The Believer’s Authority,” a subject he describes as widely discussed yet often misunderstood in the church today . The central question he poses is profoundly simple yet life-changing: “How would your life change if you understood your authority in Christ?”
This teaching challenges conventional thinking about spiritual authority and reveals truths that many believers have never learned in traditional church settings. As Wommack states, “Most Christians are not being taught about their authority in Christ, much less how to use it” .
PART TWO: THE FOUNDATION OF BELIEVER’S AUTHORITY
The Original Mandate
Wommack traces the foundation of believer’s authority back to Genesis 1:28, where God gave mankind the original commission:
“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28, emphasis mine) .
Wommack explains that “to subdue anything means to cause it to submit” . This means that whether it be an animal, plant, or anything else on earth, mankind was given dominion over it. He references Psalm 82:6 where God said, “Ye are gods,” not meaning deity in the sense of being divine, but speaking of giving mankind absolute control and rulership over the earth .
God Limited Himself
Perhaps one of the most striking aspects of Wommack’s teaching is the revelation that by delegating authority to mankind, God limited His own power over what happens on earth . This is a profound shift in understanding for many believers who assume that God sovereignly controls everything that happens.
Wommack addresses this directly: “There are those who think God just sovereignly rules and controls everything, but that is wrong theology. I realize that statement is offensive to about half of the body of Christ. There are a lot of churches that teach God is sovereign, and everything that happens is either controlled by Him or is allowed by Him. But I’m telling you that is not true” .
He clarifies that he does believe in the sovereignty of God if defined as being “first in rank, order, or authority” . However, religion has added a different connotation to the word sovereign by suggesting it means God controls everything—a concept he asserts is not taught in Scripture .
The Source of All Authority
Genesis 1:1 clearly establishes that all authority comes from God: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” . Therefore, everything and every being—whether spiritual, angelic, or physical—was created by God. He is the author of all things, but He delegated His authority to humanity .
PART THREE: THE NATURE OF OUR AUTHORITY
Authority Delegated, Not Earned
Wommack emphasizes that the authority believers have is not something they earned but something delegated to them by God. This is similar to how a police officer has authority—not because of personal power, but because of the position they hold and the laws they enforce .
“A police officer doesn’t make laws; they just enforce them. A law enforcement officer’s ability to exercise their authority is dependent on their knowledge of the laws” . Likewise, a believer’s ability to exercise their spiritual authority is proportional to their knowledge of God’s laws and Word .
Jesus Demonstrated Delegated Authority
Wommack points to Matthew 10:8 as evidence of the authority Jesus gave His disciples:
“Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give” .
Notice that Jesus didn’t tell them to go pray and ask Him to heal the sick. He gave them His authority and told them to do these things themselves. This demonstrates that God has promised believers absolute victory over sickness, not just sometimes, not just for minor things, and not only for some people .
Countering Cultural Lies
Wommack challenges the cultural and familial beliefs that have conditioned Christians to accept sickness and problems as normal:
“But we’ve been brought up to believe that at certain times of the year, you just get sick. Or when you get older, you just start having all of these problems, and you need to accept it as normal. People will say things like, ‘This just runs in my family.’ Whether you realize it or not, those are lies of the devil” .
PART FOUR: THE SPIRITUAL BATTLE
Understanding the War
Every believer is in a spiritual war, whether they recognize it or not. Wommack states plainly: “Like it or not, every one of us is in a spiritual war. God is for us, and the devil is against us. The one we cooperate with is the one who will control us” .
There are no discharges from this service, and ignorance about the extent of this war only aids the enemy . The enemy loves to work covertly, using his only weapon: deception .
Satan’s Origin and Power
Wommack addresses a common misconception: that God created Satan as the evil being we know today. He clarifies that God created Lucifer, a powerful, godly angel . However, it was through man’s cooperation with Lucifer’s rebellion that Satan gained his current position.
“God created Lucifer, a powerful, godly angel. But man made the devil what he is today. Satan is not using some superhuman angelic power to fight us. He is using the power and authority God gave to mankind” .
This leads to a liberating truth: Satan cannot do anything to believers without their consent and cooperation . The only power Satan has is deception .
The Armor of God
In Ephesians, the Apostle Paul talks about the armor that Christians must wear to defeat Satan and why it’s so important:
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:10-12) .
Why do believers need to put on the whole armor of God? So they can stand against the devil’s wiles, which is defined as “a trick intended to deceive or ensnare” .
Resisting the Devil
Wommack points to James 4:7 as a key verse for exercising authority: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” .
The order is important: submission to God must precede resistance of the devil. Once believers are submitted to God, they have the authority to resist the enemy, and he will flee.
PART FIVE: THE BATTLEFIELD OF THE MIND
Where the Real Battle Is Fought
One of the most crucial revelations in Wommack’s teaching is that the real battle is in the mind . This contradicts much of what is taught about spiritual warfare in many churches today.
“The way some Christians are doing spiritual warfare in the atmosphere is inspired by the devil. It’s a diversion to keep us from fighting the real battle which is right between our ears” .
This teaching redirects believers from focusing on external spiritual conflicts to addressing the battlefield of their thoughts.
The Enemy’s Strategy
Satan’s only power is deception, and that’s why knowing the truth sets people free . The enemy works through thoughts, interjecting negative influence on a consistent basis. He cannot control a believer outside of their will, but he can use the power of fear, jealousy, envy, bitterness, self-pity, and more .
A believer’s lack of awareness and understanding of this battle only works to the enemy’s advantage .
Winning the Battle for Your Thoughts
Wommack teaches that if believers can win the battle for their thoughts, they can defeat the devil . This requires:
- Recognizing the source of negative thoughts – discerning whether thoughts come from God, self, or the enemy
- Rejecting thoughts that contradict God’s Word – refusing to entertain deception
- Renewing the mind – replacing lies with truth through meditation on Scripture
PART SIX: AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY
The Contract of God’s Word
Wommack references Psalm 89:34, which states that every word that comes out of God’s mouth is a contract and He will never violate it . Therefore, when the Lord gave believers authority, He limited what He will do to what believers will do.
This means that God will not rebuke the devil for believers—that is their responsibility . This teaching answers many questions about why bad things happen and why prayers sometimes seem unanswered.
Responsibility to Preach the Gospel
Part of the authority God has given believers is to preach the gospel to the lost . This means that God won’t do what He told believers to do. He won’t save people just through prayer alone. They have to hear the gospel and believe, since faith comes by hearing God’s Word .
Wommack teaches the right way to pray for the lost is not to ask God to save them apart from human instrumentality, but to recognize that believers are God’s chosen method for reaching the world.
The Balance of Grace and Faith
Wommack’s teaching consistently emphasizes the balance between grace and faith . Grace is God’s part—what He has already provided through Christ. Faith is the believer’s part—receiving and acting on what God has provided. Authority operates in this balance: God has given the authority, but believers must exercise it.

PART NINE: PRAYER FOR ACTIVATING YOUR AUTHORITY
Father, I thank You that You have delegated authority to me as a believer in Jesus Christ. I thank You that I am not powerless against the forces of darkness, but I have been given dominion and authority through Your Word.
Lord, I submit myself fully to You. I surrender my will, my mind, my emotions, and my body to Your Lordship. I renounce every agreement I have made with the enemy through fear, doubt, unbelief, and deception.
I resist the devil in the name of Jesus, and I command him to flee from me. I reject every lie he has planted in my mind. I refuse to accept sickness, poverty, fear, or any work of the enemy as normal or inevitable.
I receive the truth of Your Word. I am more than a conqueror through Christ who loves me. I have authority over all the power of the enemy. Nothing shall by any means harm me.
I exercise my authority today over every circumstance in my life. I speak healing to my body. I speak provision to my finances. I speak peace to my mind. I speak breakthrough to my situation.
Thank You, Father, for the authority You have given me. Help me to walk in it faithfully and to use it for Your glory.

PART TEN: CONCLUSION – YOUR AUTHORITY CHANGES EVERYTHING
