INTRODUCTION

Or do we redeem it—transforming February 14th from a celebration of romantic love into a solemn assembly of divine love, a day of prayer, declaration, and prophetic encounter?

PART ONE: THE ORIGIN OF VALENTINES DAY – A STORY OF SACRIFICE

Before the greeting card companies, before the chocolate boxes, before the heart-shaped balloons, there was a man named Valentine.

The most widely accepted account tells of St. Valentine of Rome, a priest who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Claudius, believing that single men made better soldiers than married ones, outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, seeing the cruelty and injustice of this decree, continued to perform marriages in secret. When his actions were discovered, he was arrested, imprisoned, and eventually executed—on February 14th, approximately 269 AD.

Before his death, legend holds that Valentine healed the jailer’s blind daughter and, as a final act of love, sent her a note signed, “Your Valentine.”

A priest who married lovers in secret.
A healer who restored sight to the blind.
A martyr who gave his life for love.

This is the true Valentine. Not a cherubic cupid shooting arrows of infatuation, but a man who understood that greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13).

Valentine died for love. But another Valentine—no, another Victor—died for love two centuries earlier. His name was Jesus. And His love did not end at execution. It triumphed over the grave.

This Valentines Day, we celebrate not a saint, but the Saviour. Not a martyr, but the Messiah. Not romantic love, but REDEMPTIVE LOVE.

PART TWO: THE WORLD’S LOVE VS. THE WORD’S LOVE

The world sings of love that fades.
The Word declares a love that never faileth. (1 Corinthians 13:8)

The world writes love letters that are forgotten.
The Word declares that our names are engraved upon the palms of His hands. (Isaiah 49:16)

The world offers flowers that wither.
The Word offers the Rose of Sharon who bloomed from the ground of Calvary. (Song of Solomon 2:1)

The world sells chocolates that satisfy for a moment.
The Word offers the Bread of Life that satisfieth forever. (John 6:35)

The world’s love is conditional: I love you because…
The Word’s love is covenantal: I love you. Period.

This Valentines Day, we are not rejecting the world’s expressions of love. We are redeeming them. Every rose can be a reminder of His blood. Every chocolate can be a taste of His sweetness. Every card can be a testament to the love letter He wrote us—the Holy Bible.

PART THREE: WHY PRAYER POINTS FOR VALENTINES DAY?

Because love is under attack.

Marriage is being redefined. Purity is being mocked. Covenant is being replaced by convenience. Commitment is being traded for cohabitation.
