Deuteronomy 2:26-33 (KJV)

²⁶ And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

²⁷ Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

²⁸ Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

²⁹ (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.

³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

³¹ And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

³² Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

³³ And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

¹¹ And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

Deuteronomy 2:26-29: The Offer of Peace
Before engaging in battle, Moses sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon with “words of peace.” Israel did not seek war; they sought peaceful passage through his land. They promised to stay on the main road, not to turn aside, and to pay for any food or water they consumed. This shows God’s people were not aggressive or predatory—they offered peace first. This is a principle: offer peace before conflict, and give others the opportunity to respond rightly.

Deuteronomy 2:30: God Hardened His Heart
The text says, “The LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate.” This is a difficult truth—God hardened Sihon’s heart so that He might deliver him into Israel’s hands. This was part of God’s sovereign judgment on the Amorites, whose iniquity had reached its fullness (Genesis 15:16). Sihon’s rejection of peace was not only his own choice but also part of God’s divine plan. God can use even human rebellion to accomplish His purposes.

Deuteronomy 2:31-33: Begin to Possess
God declared: “Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess.” God had already given the victory—Israel only needed to step forward and possess what had been promised. Sihon came out to fight, but “the LORD our God delivered him before us.” This demonstrates that when God is with us, no enemy can stand against us. The victory is already won; we simply need to receive it.

Deuteronomy 20:11-13: Terms of Peace and War

These passages from Deuteronomy give us a powerful framework for dealing with opposition and conflict.

The principle is clear: peace first, then battle if necessary. Israel offered peace to Sihon before fighting him. They were not looking for war but for a peaceful passage. But when peace was rejected, they fought—and God gave them the victory.

This reflects God’s character. He is a God of mercy and patience, slow to anger and abounding in love. He offers peace to all—through Jesus Christ, He has extended the ultimate offer of peace (Romans 5:1). But when that peace is rejected, judgment follows. God does not force His peace on anyone; it must be received.

For us, this means we should always extend grace and peace first. Before confronting, before fighting, before reacting—offer peace. Many times, conflict can be avoided simply by speaking gently and offering reconciliation. But when peace is rejected and opposition continues, we can trust that God will fight for us.

“Begin to possess” is a powerful command. God had already given the victory—Israel just needed to step forward and take it. There are promises God has made to you that you need to begin to possess today. The victory is already won at the cross. The enemy is defeated. Step forward in faith and take what God has given you!
