BASIC SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 11:1-9

BASIC SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 11:1-9 (KJV)

1. And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

4. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

7. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

8. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

9. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, let my unity with others be rooted in You and Your purposes, not in pride or rebellion against Your will.

2. Lord, expose every tower I am building in my life that is motivated by the desire to make a name for myself rather than to glorify You.

3. Father, I repent of every ambition that seeks to reach heaven by my own efforts. Let me build only what You have ordained.

4. Lord, let me not use brick for stone and slime for mortar — let me not substitute human effort for divine foundation.

5. Father, when You see my building, let it be pleasing to You, not an abomination that requires Your judgment.

6. Lord, I ask that You scatter every plan and project in my life that is not according to Your will. Let it be confounded and left unfinished.

7. Father, let me never be scattered from Your presence. Keep me close to You, even if it means my plans are disrupted.

8. Lord, let me build for Your name and Your glory alone. Let me not seek a name for myself, but let me be known as Yours.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that my unity is rooted in God, not in rebellion. I am one with others only in the purposes of the Lord.

2. I will not build towers to make a name for myself. My ambition is to glorify God, not to exalt myself.

3. I reject human effort that tries to reach heaven by its own strength. My foundation is Christ alone.

4. I will not substitute brick for stone or slime for mortar. I build on the true foundation, not on human substitutes.

5. God sees my building. My work is pleasing to Him. It will not be confounded or judged.

6. Every plan not according to God’s will is scattered and left unfinished. I release it and let it go.

7. I am not scattered from God’s presence. Though my plans may be disrupted, I remain close to Him.

8. I build for God’s name alone. My name is secondary. His glory is primary.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Genesis 11:4 — “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

The Context:

After the flood, humanity multiplied. They all spoke one language. They journeyed from the east and found a plain in Shinar. There, they decided to settle. But their ambition was not innocent. They wanted to build a city and a tower that would reach heaven. They wanted to make a name for themselves. They feared being scattered, so they built a monument to human achievement. This was not a project of obedience. It was a project of pride.

One Language, One Purpose:

The people were united, but their unity was not holy. They had one language and one speech, but they used it for rebellion. They said, “Go to” — let us do this together. Unity is not always good. Unity can be wicked. It depends on what you are united for. They were united in pride, and God saw it.

Brick for Stone, Slime for Mortar:

The builders used brick instead of stone, and slime instead of mortar. Stone was natural and strong. Brick was man-made and weaker. They used human substitutes for divine materials. They were building with what they could produce, not with what God provided. Their tower was not built on the true foundation. It was built on human ingenuity.

Let Us Make Us a Name:

This was the heart of their rebellion. They wanted a name. They wanted fame. They wanted significance without God. They were not building for God’s glory. They were building for their own. They feared being scattered, so they tried to secure their own legacy by their own hands. God had commanded them to fill the earth. They refused. They wanted to stay together and build their own kingdom.

The LORD Came Down:

The irony is striking. They were building a tower to reach heaven. But the LORD had to come down to see it. Their tower was so small that God had to descend to look at it. Human pride is always laughably small in the eyes of God. They thought they were building something great. God saw it for what it was — a tiny monument to human arrogance.

Nothing Will Be Restrained (Verse 6):

God said, “Nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” When humanity is united in pride, there is no limit to their wickedness. God had to intervene. He was not threatened by their tower. He was merciful. He scattered them so they would not become completely corrupt. The scattering was not just judgment. It was also grace.

Confounding the Language:

God confused their language so they could not understand one another. The project stopped. The city was never finished. The place was called Babel — which means confusion. What was meant to be a monument to human greatness became a monument to human failure. God always wins.

Question for the Day:

Are you building a tower — a project, a reputation, a legacy — for your own name or for God’s name? Are you trying to reach heaven by your own effort, or are you submitting to God’s will? And what is your “Babel” that needs to be left unfinished?
