BASIC SCRIPTURE: ISAIAH 40:1-8

BASIC SCRIPTURE: ISAIAH 40:1-8 (KJV)

1. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

2. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.

3. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

4. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

5. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

6. The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

7. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

8. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, comfort me as You have promised to comfort Your people. Let me receive Your comfort in every area of my life.

2. Lord, I receive Your word that my warfare is accomplished and my iniquity is pardoned. Let me walk in the freedom of forgiveness.

3. Father, prepare the way of the Lord in my life. Make straight in the desert a highway for my God.

4. Lord, let every valley in my life be exalted. Let every mountain and hill be made low. Let every crooked place be made straight.

5. Father, let the glory of the Lord be revealed in my life. Let all flesh see that You are God.

6. Lord, I thank You that though the grass withereth and the flower fadeth, Your word shall stand forever.

7. Father, let me build my life on Your eternal Word. Let me not trust in the fleeting things of the world.

8. Lord, let me be a voice crying in the wilderness, preparing the way for Your coming.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Isaiah 40:8 — “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

Comfort, Comfort My People (Verse 1):

The chapter begins with a double command. “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people.” God is speaking to His messengers. He wants His people to be comforted. They have been in exile. They have been in affliction. They have been in judgment. They have suffered. They have wept. They have mourned. They have been punished for their sins. But now the time of comfort has come. God is not angry forever. He is not harsh forever. He is merciful. He is gracious. He is compassionate. He is the God of all comfort.

Warfare Accomplished (Verse 2):

The message of comfort is specific. “Her warfare is accomplished.” The battle is over. The struggle is ended. The hardship is finished. “Her iniquity is pardoned.” The sin is forgiven. The guilt is removed. The penalty is paid. “She hath received of the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.” The punishment was more than enough. It was double. It was complete. It was sufficient. The debt is paid. The account is settled. The relationship is restored.

Prepare the Way of the LORD (Verse 3):

A voice cries in the wilderness. “Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” The coming of God requires preparation. The coming of God requires a highway. The coming of God requires removal of obstacles. The coming of God requires a straight path. The valleys must be filled. The mountains must be leveled. The crooked must be straightened. The rough must be smoothed. The way must be prepared. The King is coming.

Every Valley Exalted (Verse 4):

The image is of a road being built. Valleys filled. Mountains leveled. Curves straightened. Rough places smoothed. It is a picture of preparation. It is a picture of removal. It is a picture of transformation. It is a picture of readiness. God is coming. His glory will be revealed. All flesh will see it together. It is not a private event. It is a public event. It is not a secret. It is a revelation. The mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

The Glory of the LORD (Verse 5):

The goal of all preparation is the revelation of God’s glory. His glory is His presence. His glory is His power. His glory is His beauty. His glory is His majesty. His glory is His holiness. His glory is His goodness. His glory is His love. And all flesh will see it. Not just Israel. Not just the church. All flesh. Every eye will see. Every tongue will confess. Every knee will bow. The glory of the Lord will be revealed.

All Flesh Is Grass (Verses 6-8):

A voice says, “Cry.” The prophet asks, “What shall I cry?” The answer is a sobering truth. “All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field.” Human life is temporary. Human beauty is fleeting. Human strength is fading. Human glory is passing. The grass withers. The flower fades. The wind blows. The flower falls. The grass dies. People are like grass. They are here today and gone tomorrow. They are like a flower. They bloom for a moment and then fade away.

The Word of Our God Shall Stand Forever (Verse 8):

In contrast to the fleeting nature of humanity, the word of God stands forever. It is eternal. It is unchanging. It is immutable. It is incorruptible. It is invincible. It is indestructible. It is imperishable. It is the foundation of our hope. It is the anchor of our faith. It is the source of our comfort. It is the basis of our security. The grass withers. The flower fades. But the word of God stands forever.

Are you receiving God’s comfort? Are you preparing the way of the Lord in your life? Are you building on the eternal Word of God, or are you building on the fleeting things of the world?
