BASIC SCRIPTURE: NUMBERS 22:20-41
BASIC SCRIPTURE: THURSDAY, 10TH SEPTEMBER 2026 — NUMBERS 22:20-41 (KJV)

And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.

And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.

And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.

PRAYER POINTS — THURSDAY, 10TH SEPTEMBER 2026

Father, let me only speak the word that You put in my mouth. Let me not speak what I desire, but only what You command.

Lord, when my way is perverse before You, let me be stopped. Let Your angel stand in the way and turn me back.
-
Father, open my eyes to see the spiritual realities around me. Let me not be blind to Your presence and Your warnings.
-
Lord, I repent of every time I have smitten the donkey — every time I have ignored Your messengers or Your warnings.
-
Father, let me not run after rewards and honours that come from man. Let me not be drawn away by the promises of Balak.
-
Lord, let me not be like Balaam who loved the wages of unrighteousness. Let me be content with Your word alone.
-
Father, when I am offered promotion and honour by the world, let me not be swayed. Let me only speak what You command.
-
Lord, let me not curse what You have blessed or bless what You have cursed. Let my words align with Your will.
DECLARATIONS — THURSDAY, 10TH SEPTEMBER 2026

I declare that I speak only the word that God puts in my mouth. I do not speak what I desire, but only what He commands.

When my way is perverse before God, I am stopped. His angel stands in the way and turns me back.

My eyes are opened to see the spiritual realities around me. I am not blind to God’s presence and warnings.

I repent of every time I have ignored God’s messengers and warnings. I will not smite the donkey.
-
I do not run after rewards and honours that come from man. I am not drawn away by the promises of Balak.

I am not like Balaam who loved the wages of unrighteousness. I am content with God’s word alone.

When the world offers me promotion and honour, I am not swayed. I speak only what God commands.

I do not curse what God has blessed or bless what He has cursed. My words align with His will.
ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — THURSDAY, 10TH SEPTEMBER 2026
Key Verse: Numbers 22:38 — “And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.”
The Permission (Verse 20):
God told Balaam to go with the men, but only to speak what He commanded. Balaam had been told not to go. He went anyway. He was persistent. He wanted the reward. He wanted the honour. He wanted the money. And God gave him permission. But it was not approval. It was a test. It was a trial. It was a judgment. Balaam was going to go. God would let him go. But he would not be able to speak what he wanted. He would only be able to speak what God gave him.
The Anger of God (Verses 21-22):
Balaam went. He rose up in the morning. He saddled his ass. He went with the princes of Moab. And God’s anger was kindled. God had given him permission to go, but His anger was kindled. Why? Because Balaam’s heart was wrong. He was going for the wrong reasons. He was going for the money. He was going for the honour. He was going for the reward. His heart was perverse. His way was perverse. And God was angry.
The Angel and the Donkey (Verses 23-27):
The angel of the Lord stood in the way. He was an adversary. He had a drawn sword. Balaam could not see him. But the donkey could. The donkey saw him. The donkey turned aside. The donkey pressed against the wall. The donkey fell down. The donkey saved Balaam’s life. But Balaam was angry. He beat the donkey. He did not understand. He was blind. He was stubborn. He was determined to go. He could not see the danger. He could not see the angel. He could not see the sword.
The Opened Mouth (Verses 28-30):
The Lord opened the mouth of the donkey. She spoke. She asked Balaam, “What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?” Balaam answered. He was angry. He was frustrated. He was irrational. He said, “Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.” The donkey reminded him of her faithful service. “Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee?” Balaam had to admit, “Nay.”
The Opened Eyes (Verses 31-34):
The Lord opened Balaam’s eyes. He saw the angel. He saw the sword. He bowed down his head. He fell flat on his face. He was terrified. He was humbled. He was broken. The angel asked him, “Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times?” The angel told him the truth. “I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me.” The donkey had saved his life. The donkey had seen the angel. The donkey had turned aside. And Balaam had beaten her. He confessed, “I have sinned.” He offered to turn back. But the angel told him to go. He was to speak only what God commanded.
Balaam’s Confession (Verse 38):
Balaam went to Balak. He said, “Have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.” He acknowledged his limitation. He was not free to speak what he wanted. He was bound to speak what God gave him. He could not curse Israel. He could only bless them. He could not speak against God’s people. He could only speak for them.
The High Places of Baal (Verse 41):
Balak took Balaam to the high places of Baal. He wanted him to see Israel. He wanted him to curse them. He thought that Balaam could change God’s mind. He thought that Balaam could break God’s blessing. He was wrong. Balaam could only speak what God gave him. He could only bless what God had blessed. He could only speak what God commanded.
Question for the Day — Thursday, 10th September 2026:
Is your way perverse before God? Are you running after the rewards of this world? Are you blind to the spiritual realities around you? Are you willing to speak only what God puts in your mouth? And are you willing to bless what God has blessed, and curse what He has cursed?
