Restoration Promised

KEY VERSE
“The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee” (Jeremiah 31:3).
Bible Reading:
Jeremiah 31:1-14 (KJV)
1 At the same time, saith the LORD, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.
2 Thus saith the LORD, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.
3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
4 Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.
5 Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.
6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God.
7 For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
10 Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
11 For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.
12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.
Our God is a loving God. He will not for ever put away the prodigal son. When He sees elements of repentance in the backslider or sinner, He forgives because of His kindness, longsuffering and love. By application, this was exactly what happened to Israel in our text. Although a larger part of them had been sent into captivity because of their sins, there was God’s promise of restoration because of His love.
God, in this passage, gives assurance to His people that He will again take them into covenant relationship with Him. He will settle them again. They shall have a joyful return to their land after many years of captivity. During the captivity, Israel was scattered and became a miserable flock. The change in their fortune is compared by the prophets to a shepherd seeking His lost sheep and feeding them again in green pastures. Taking the whole chapter together, we can see the restoration of Israel generally and specifically that of Judah to the Promised Land.
At the end of the age, God will take Israel into a new covenant relationship with Himself from which they have been cut hundreds of years ago because of their rebellion. During this time, all shall come to the knowledge of God and the earth shall be filled with songs of joy. Those who have given their lives to Christ and yielded to the Holy Spirit, will have their sins remembered no more. With the great and wonderful love of God shown to us, we should always remain grateful to Him.
This glorious hope should continually incentivise believers to keep serving the Lord in holiness while also seeking to bring others into the Kingdom. You can enjoy present and future restoration when you align with the injunctions of the Scripture. Ensure therefore that you choose a closer walk with God with absolute obedience to His precepts that you may enjoy His package of full restoration for you now and all through eternity.

COMMENTARY
1. The Everlasting Love of God – Jeremiah declares that God has loved His people with an everlasting love. This love is not based on their performance but on His character. Even when they were in captivity because of sin, God’s love remained. His lovingkindness drew them back to Himself.
2. The Promise of Restoration – God promised to restore Israel to their land and to covenant relationship with Him. They would return with joy, singing and dancing. Their mourning would be turned into joy. This is a picture of the restoration He offers to every repentant sinner and backslider today.
3. The Shepherd Seeking His Sheep – The devotional compares God’s restoration to a shepherd seeking his lost sheep and feeding them in green pastures. God does not abandon His people; He pursues them, gathers them, and cares for them. No one is too far gone for His reach.
4. The Hope of the New Covenant – At the end of the age, God will establish a new covenant with Israel, and all shall know Him. This points to the ultimate restoration through Jesus Christ, where sins are remembered no more. The believer’s hope is not just present restoration but eternal glory.
5. The DCLM Ministry’s Message of Restoration – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes God’s restoring grace. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that no matter how far anyone has fallen, God’s love can bring them back. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to return to God and walk in obedience.
