PART ONE: THE DEVOTIONAL READING
Daily Manna Saturday March 14th 2026
Topic: An Encouraging Hope
The story of Viktor Frankl, a Jewish survivor of holocaust, is a testimony of the transformative power of hope in overcoming adversity and achieving great things in spite of oppressive and negative circumstances. Viktor, his wife and his parents were arrested in 1942 and deported to concentration camps. His parents were killed in the gas chambers, while Viktor and his wife were separated and sent to different camps. Despite the unimaginable suffering, he found hope amid despair. He went on to develop logo-therapy, which focused on finding meaning and purpose in life. He believed that in the most challenging and painful circumstances, one can find meaning and purpose and thereby develop a powerful resilience for survival.
God gives this power of hope to the righteous who lived among the proud and the wicked in Israel. In this last prophetic utterance recorded in the Old Testament, God declares that there is a coming day of devastating judgment upon all the arrogant, wicked and sinful people of the land. Those who live in pride and wickedness, carrying on as though there was no one to question them, would face terrible judgment on the coming day of the Lord. But for those who choose to live in righteousness and the fear of the Lord in spite of prevailing and pervading sinfulness and wickedness, God gives a promise of divine visitation and preservation. The Sun of righteousness would rise for them and cause them to triumph over the wicked who hitherto had oppressed and harassed them. This promise serves as a hope booster, giving them the strength to remain resilient and forge on in spite of temporal adversity.
Just as the Lord spoke of the coming day of judgment on sinful and backslidden Israel, He has equally spoken of the coming day of judgment on this world that has totally forgotten God. Sinners who have turned their back on God and have chosen to indulge in all forms of sins and abominations will face the judgment of God. But for the believer, the promise of the impending return of the Lord to take the believers away from divine wrath is a great source of hope. This hope is a source of encouragement to the believer to continue to live righteously in a world where holy living has become increasingly unpopular.
In the face of the discouraging situation in the world, the believer has something to look forward to, for survival. The believers’ hope is not only in the rapture. There is hope for the present day. Whatever the situation believers face, the Lord has promised to show up in their lives as “the Sun of righteousness with healing in his wings.”
Thought for the day: Those who put their trust in Christ have a hope that is as constant as the northern star.

PART TWO: COMMENTARY ON THE DEVOTIONAL
Introduction: The Power of Hope
The Daily Manna devotional for today draws a powerful parallel between the experience of Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl and the promise given to God’s people in Malachi’s prophecy. Both demonstrate the transformative power of hope in the midst of unimaginable suffering.
Viktor Frankl’s story is a testament to human resilience. Despite losing his parents to the gas chambers, being separated from his wife, and enduring the horrors of concentration camps, he found meaning in his suffering. He developed logotherapy, a psychological approach centered on finding purpose even in pain. His belief was simple yet profound: in the most challenging circumstances, one can find meaning and thereby develop powerful resilience for survival.
This human example points to a deeper spiritual truth: God Himself is the ultimate source of hope for His people.
The Context of Malachi’s Prophecy
Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament. After Malachi, there would be 400 years of silence before the arrival of John the Baptist and the coming of Christ. The prophecy in chapter 4 is God’s final word to Israel before that long silence—and it is a word of both warning and hope.
The Warning (verses 1-3a)
The day of the Lord is coming—a day of judgment that burns like an oven. The proud, the wicked, and the arrogant will be consumed like stubble. There will be no root or branch left for them. This is the sobering reality of divine judgment against sin.
The Promise (verses 2-3b)
But for those who fear God’s name, there is a different promise:
– “The Sun of righteousness shall arise” – A new day dawns for God’s people
– “With healing in His wings” – The rays of this Sun bring restoration and wholeness
– “Ye shall go forth” – Liberation from oppression
– “Grow up as calves of the stall” – Strength, vitality, and flourishing
The imagery is beautiful. Just as the sun rises to dispel darkness and bring warmth, the Sun of righteousness (a clear reference to the coming Messiah) rises to bring healing, freedom, and growth.
The Twofold Hope for Believers
The devotional identifies two dimensions of hope for believers:
1. Future Hope – The Rapture and Resurrection
Just as Malachi spoke of a coming day of judgment, the New Testament speaks of a coming day when Christ will return for His people. This is the blessed hope of the Church—the rapture, the resurrection, and eternal union with Christ. This hope comforts us in the face of death and gives us courage to face an uncertain world.
2. Present Hope – Divine Intervention Now
But the believer’s hope is not only in the future. There is hope for the present day. The same Sun of righteousness that will rise in glory also rises in our circumstances today. Whatever situation believers face, the Lord has promised to show up in their lives with healing in His wings.
The Source of Resilience
Viktor Frankl found meaning in suffering through human philosophy. The believer finds meaning through divine promise. The hope we have is not self-generated; it is God-given. It is rooted in the character of God and the faithfulness of His Word.
This hope produces resilience:
– It enables us to endure when circumstances are harsh
– It empowers us to resist when temptation is strong
– It encourages us to continue when the path is difficult
– It energizes us to grow when conditions are unfavorable
Living Righteously in an Unrighteous World
The devotional notes that “holy living has become increasingly unpopular.” The pressure to conform to the world’s standards is intense. But the hope of Christ’s return and the promise of His present help give believers the strength to live differently.
We are called to:
– Fear God’s name in a culture that has forgotten Him
– Live righteously among the proud and wicked
– Hold fast to hope when circumstances seem hopeless
– Look for the rising of the Sun of righteousness in our lives
The Thought for the Day
“Those who put their trust in Christ have a hope that is as constant as the northern star.”
The northern star (Polaris) has been used for centuries as a fixed point of navigation. It does not move; it remains constant while all other stars appear to rotate around it. Similarly, the hope of the believer is unchanging, unwavering, and absolutely reliable. No matter how circumstances shift, this hope remains fixed.

Lord, I receive that healing today. Let it flow into my body, into my mind, into my spirit. Heal every wound, restore every brokenness, revive every dry place.
I declare that I go forth from every prison of limitation. I grow up as calves of the stall—strong, vigorous, and full of life.
Let my hope in You be as constant as the northern star. No matter what changes around me, my hope in You remains fixed.
I thank You for the promise of Your coming—that blessed hope that comforts me in every loss and encourages me in every trial.
I thank You also for present hope—that You show up in my life today with healing and deliverance.
Let me live righteously in an unrighteous world, fearing Your name and walking in Your ways.
