Undesirable Fight
KEY VERSE

11 And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.
12 And they went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahanehdan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjathjearim.
13 And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.
14 Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
15 And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.
16 And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.
17 And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
18 And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?
MESSAGE
“The good fight of faith”, says the American preacher, Pastor A. W. Tozer, “is not just about winning; it’s about being faithful to the end.”
Today’s passage talks about a group of six hundred armed Danites, under the leadership of five men, who journeyed to Laish to conquer the city. They killed the inhabitants, burnt the town, took over their idol, and renamed it Dan. Theirs was the wrong kind of fight. Their military prowess did not translate into spiritual victory. They were defeated morally and spiritually. They became idolatrous, an outright disobedience to God’s command. They were not wrestling to keep their souls or maintain a good relationship with God and their fellow men but fought for earthly gain.
The Christian life is a life of battles. The Lord never promised a trouble-free ride to heaven. Though our arch-enemy has long been defeated on the Cross at Calvary, we must constantly fight the good fight of faith to overcome at the end of the day. The Lord Jesus said we must strive to enter the kingdom, which is meant for all overcomers. In the same vein, Apostle Paul taught that there is a constant battle against the forces of darkness. We are called to engage in carnal, worthless battles over the vanities of life. Christians do not plot, scheme and fight to dispossess others of their rightful possessions and positions.
The Christian contest is not a one-off fight. It is continuous battles; we do not stop until we leave this world and join myriads of saints in heaven who fought the good fight of faith, finished their assigned tasks, and have been welcomed into eternal habitation and rest.
Let us ensure we put on the whole armour of God and fight the good fight of faith. We must continually fight against sin, self, and Satan.

COMMENTARY
1. The Wrong Kind of Fight – The Danites fought for territory and earthly gain, not for righteousness. Their military success was accompanied by moral and spiritual failure. They became idolatrous and disobedient to God. This is a warning against fighting for the wrong causes—earthly possessions, positions, and vanities.
2. The Christian’s Battles – The Christian life is a life of continuous battles. We fight against sin, self, and Satan. The Lord never promised a trouble-free journey, but He promised victory to those who endure. We must strive to enter the kingdom, which is for overcomers.
3. The Good Fight of Faith – The good fight is not about winning earthly battles but about being faithful to the end. It is about keeping our souls, maintaining a good relationship with God, and loving our fellow men. We must not be distracted by carnal battles that have no eternal value.
4. The Whole Armour of God – To fight the good fight, we must put on the whole armour of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). This includes truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. With this armour, we can stand against the wiles of the devil.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, help me to fight the right battles. Keep me from being distracted by earthly pursuits and carnal conflicts. Help me to put on the whole armour of God and to stand firm against the enemy. Give me the strength to endure to the end and to be faithful until I see You face to face. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
