KEY VERSE
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:2).

Bible Reading:
Psalm 103:1-22 (KJV)

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
21 Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.
22 Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

MESSAGE

The story was told of a young boy who was given writing materials to write everything God and Satan had done for him within an hour. He set out to write about the blessings he received from God. He kept on remembering new things to write about the goodness of God in his life, and by the time he was done with that, the entire time was taken. So, he wrote at the bottom of his script “NO TIME FOR SATAN”.

It is difficult to itemise all benefits we receive from God as His children. David, in the text, listed several of them, but the list is endless: He forgives all our sins, heals all our diseases, redeems our lives from destruction, satisfies our mouths with good things, provides justice for the oppressed, shows mercy to people, and retains not His anger forever. Attention was then shifted to His throne in heaven, where the angels worship Him and do all His commandments. His dominion is universal and His Kingdom rules over all.

David, the psalmist, wrote this psalm from his wealth of experience as Israel’s king. He could tell and sing of God’s mercies because he experienced them. He spoke from personal experience when God took him from following the sheep as a shepherd to set him up as king in Israel. He saved him from the many battles he had to fight to maintain as well as expand the nation’s territory. And when he fell into sin, with the devastating consequences on his family and kingship, he cried to God in penitence and received forgiveness. David knew that God’s kingdom is not like that of man. He reigns and rules over the entire universe.

Like David, we should recall, remember and count our blessings, naming them one by one. We must deliberately focus our attention on the wonderful things He has done for us and stop worrying over the unresolved problems in our lives. As we praise God for His past mercies and blessings, we can be sure that He will arise and do more in our lives.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Don’t count your loses, count your blessings

COMMENTARY

1. The Call to Bless the Lord – David begins and ends this psalm with the same exhortation: “Bless the LORD, O my soul.” This is a deliberate act of the will. He is commanding his own soul to praise God, not waiting for feelings but choosing to worship. True worship arises from a heart that remembers God’s goodness.

2. The Catalogue of Benefits – David lists God’s benefits: forgiveness of sins, healing of diseases, redemption from destruction, lovingkindness, satisfaction with good things, justice for the oppressed, and mercy. The list is not exhaustive but representative. God’s goodness is beyond our ability to fully recount. The more we remember, the more we find to praise Him for.

3. The Character of God – The psalm reveals God’s character: He is merciful, gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He does not deal with us as our sins deserve. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. This is the foundation of our confidence and the reason for our praise.

4. Remembering Our Frailty – God knows our frame and remembers that we are dust. He does not expect us to be perfect; He shows compassion as a father shows compassion to his children. This understanding of our frailty should lead us to trust Him more, not to excuse sin but to rely on His mercy.

5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Gratitude – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes the importance of a thankful heart. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that believers should cultivate a lifestyle of praise, focusing on God’s blessings rather than their problems. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to count their blessings and trust God for more.

About DCLM and Daily Manna

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and a lifestyle of praise and thanksgiving.

DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to remember God’s benefits and praise Him.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, forgive me for the times I have forgotten Your benefits and focused on my problems. Help me to bless You with all that is within me. I thank You for forgiving my sins, healing my wounds, redeeming my life, and satisfying me with good things. I choose to remember Your goodness and praise You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
