RCCG Open Heaven 20 October 2026 Daily Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye – SHIELD YOUR CHILDREN II
Topic: SHIELD YOUR CHILDREN II

Memorise:
And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
— Psalm 50:15 (KJV)
Read: Matthew 17:14-18 (KJV)
14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
RCCG Open Heavens 20 October 2026 Today Message by Pastor E.A. Adeboye
Yesterday, I mentioned that the Bible clearly admonishes parents to train up their children in the way they should go so that when they grow old, they won’t depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). Training up a child involves what the child is taught and what is done for him or her. A well-trained child is an empowered child because such a child knows how to stand for what is right, even when he or she is alone.
If you are a parent, there are many things you can do with your children, but one of the most important things to do is to pray with them from a young age. Apart from showing them how to pray, you must also involve them in prayers and teach them how to reverence God. In addition to praying with them, it is also essential that you pray for them. As soon as I gave my life to Jesus Christ, my children and I became signs and wonders (Isaiah 8:18). However, I still had the responsibility of praying for them. There is a God who answers by fire, but one must pray first.
Many Christian parents are not deriving joy from their children because they don’t pray for them. Instead of praying, they complain, grumble, and nag at their children. Ephesians 6:4 says, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” When parents pray to God on behalf of their children, He hears and answers them.
In Matthew 15:22-28, a Canaanite woman approached Jesus and asked Him to deliver her daughter from the oppression of a demon, and He granted her request. Also, in today’s Bible reading, when a man whose son was tormented by a demon ran to Jesus, his request was granted, and his son became completely free from demonic oppression.
Jairus was another parent who approached Jesus concerning his child. In Mark 5:21-43, the Bible tells us that Jesus granted Jairus’ request and raised his daughter back to life. Indeed, the prayers of parents can shield and transform the lives of their children.
When parents shield their children in prayer, they acknowledge that God loves them even more than they do. When they pray, they entrust the future of their children into His capable hands, knowing that He is with them at every stage of their lives.
Prayer Point:
Father, please shield my children from every evil influence and grant them a glorious future, in Jesus’ name.
Bible in One Year:
Mark 15-16
Hymn: Rock of Ages Cleft for Me
Verse 1:
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save from wrath and make me pure.
Verse 2:
Could my tears forever flow,
Could my zeal no languor know,
These for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone:
In my hand no price I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling.
Verse 3:
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
Open Heaven Devotional 20 October 2026 Commentary
Theme: The Burden Bearer calls parents to shield their children in prayer. Training is important, but prayer is essential. Your prayers protect your children from attacks you cannot see and entrust their future to God.
Major Keywords: Shield your children, pray with your children, pray for your children, parental intercession, divine protection for children.
Commentary Summary:
Pray With Your Children: Show them how to pray, involve them in prayers, and teach them to reverence God. Your children learn to pray by praying with you.
Pray For Your Children: Your children face battles you cannot see. Your prayers are their shield. Daddy’s children became signs and wonders, but he still had to pray for them. There is a God who answers by fire—but one must pray first.
Biblical Examples: The Canaanite woman, the man with the lunatic son, and Jairus all approached Jesus on behalf of their children, and their requests were granted. The prayers of parents can shield and transform lives.
Key Truth: Stop complaining, grumbling, and nagging. Start praying. When you pray, you entrust your children’s future into God’s capable hands, knowing He loves them even more than you do.
Reference to Theme: This message, SHIELD YOUR CHILDREN II, continues the series by emphasizing that prayer is the shield that protects children. Training without prayer leaves them vulnerable. Pray with them and pray for them daily.
Action Steps:
Pray With Your Children Daily: Make prayer a family habit. Pray together in the morning, before meals, and at bedtime.
Pray For Your Children Specifically: Don’t just pray generally. Pray for each child by name—their health, friendships, education, future spouse, and walk with God.
Never Stop Praying: Even when you don’t see immediate results, keep praying. The prayers of a righteous parent avail much.
