BASIC SCRIPTURE: JOSHUA 10:1-14

BASIC SCRIPTURE: SUNDAY, 18TH OCTOBER 2026 — JOSHUA 10:1-14 (KJV)

  1. Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

  2. That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

  3. Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

  4. Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

  5. Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

  6. And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

  7. So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

  8. And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

  9. Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

  10. And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

  11. And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

  12. Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

  13. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

  14. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — SUNDAY, 18TH OCTOBER 2026

Key Verse: Joshua 10:14 — “And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.”

The Fear of the Kings (Verses 1-2):

Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, heard what Joshua had done to Ai and Jericho. He heard how Gibeon had made peace with Israel. And he feared greatly. Gibeon was a great city. It was greater than Ai. Its men were mighty. And yet they had joined themselves to Israel. The enemy was afraid. The enemy was threatened. The enemy was desperate. When God’s people begin to prosper and advance, the world takes notice. And when the world takes notice, it often responds with opposition.

The Gathering of the Five Kings (Verses 3-5):

Adonizedek gathered four other kings. The king of Hebron. The king of Jarmuth. The king of Lachish. The king of Eglon. Five kings. Five armies. They gathered against Gibeon. They came to destroy. They came to conquer. They came to punish. They came to make an example. They came because Gibeon had allied with Israel. They came because the enemy cannot stand to see God’s people united. They came because the powers of darkness always oppose the purposes of God.

The Cry for Help (Verse 6):

The men of Gibeon sent a message to Joshua. “Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us.” They cried out for help. They pleaded for deliverance. They asked for rescue. They needed Joshua. They needed Israel. They could not save themselves. They could not defeat the enemy alone. They needed someone greater. They needed someone stronger. They needed someone who had the power of God upon his life.

Joshua’s Response (Verse 7):

Joshua ascended from Gilgal. He did not hesitate. He did not delay. He did not make excuses. He did not count the cost. He did not calculate the risk. He ascended with all the people of war and all the mighty men of valour. He went up to fight. He went up to deliver. He went up to save. He went up because he was a covenant partner. He went up because Gibeon had made peace with Israel. He went up because he had made a promise. And he would keep it.

The Assurance from God (Verse 8):

God spoke to Joshua. He gave him a promise. “Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.” God did not say “I will deliver them.” He said “I have delivered them.” The victory was already accomplished in the spiritual realm. The outcome was already determined in the courts of heaven. The enemy was already defeated. Joshua just had to step into the victory. Joshua just had to walk in the promise. Joshua just had to fight the battle that was already won.

The Sudden Attack (Verse 9):

Joshua came unto them suddenly. He went up from Gilgal all night. He travelled in the darkness. He marched through the night. He arrived unexpectedly. He surprised the enemy. He caught them off guard. He attacked before they were ready. He struck before they could prepare. Sudden attacks are powerful. Surprise is a weapon. When the enemy is not expecting you, you have an advantage. When the enemy is not prepared for you, you have a victory. God will give you strategies that surprise the enemy. God will give you timing that catches them off guard.

The Discomfiture of the Enemy (Verse 10):

The Lord discomfited them before Israel. The Lord confused them. The Lord panicked them. The Lord scattered them. The Lord threw them into disarray. They fled. They ran. They were chased. They were pursued. They were smitten. They were slain. The Lord gave Israel a great victory. The Lord gave Israel a great slaughter. The Lord fought for Israel. And the enemy could not stand.

The Hailstones from Heaven (Verse 11):

As they fled, the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them. Hailstones fell from the sky. They died. More died from the hailstones than from the swords of Israel. God fought from heaven. God fought from above. God fought from the sky. God fought with supernatural weapons. God fought with hailstones. God fought with His creation. The enemy was defeated by the hand of God. The enemy was destroyed by the power of heaven.

Joshua’s Command to the Sun and Moon (Verse 12):

Joshua spoke to the Lord. He spoke in the sight of Israel. He commanded the sun to stand still upon Gibeon. He commanded the moon to stay in the valley of Ajalon. He spoke with authority. He spoke with boldness. He spoke with faith. He spoke as one who knew his God. He spoke as one who had heard the promise. He spoke as one who had seen the victory. He spoke as one who had experienced the power. He spoke to the sun. He spoke to the moon. He spoke to the creation. And the creation obeyed.

The Sun Stood Still (Verses 13-14):

The sun stood still. The moon stayed. It did not go down about a whole day. God hearkened unto the voice of a man. There was no day like that before it or after it. The Lord fought for Israel. And Joshua’s voice moved heaven. Joshua’s voice stopped the sun. Joshua’s voice held back the moon. Joshua’s voice extended the day. Joshua’s voice gave Israel time to complete the victory. What a mystery. What a wonder. What a miracle. The voice of a man moved the hand of God. The prayer of a man changed the course of nature. The command of a man altered the laws of the universe. God responds to the voice of His children. God answers the prayers of His saints. God moves when we speak. God acts when we pray.

The Lesson for Us:

When the enemy gathers against you, do not fear. God has already delivered them into your hand. No one shall stand before you. He will give you strategies. He will give you timing. He will give you unexpected victories. He will fight from heaven. He will fight with supernatural weapons. He will fight with hailstones. He will fight with His creation. He will even stop the sun for you. He will hold back the moon for you. He will extend the day for you. He will give you time to complete your victory. All because He is faithful. All because He is powerful. All because He is your God. And He hears your voice. He answers your prayer. He moves when you speak. He acts when you pray. Do not be silent. Do not be passive. Speak to your sun. Speak to your moon. Speak to your mountains. Speak to your obstacles. Speak to your enemies. And watch God fight for you.

Question for the Day — Sunday, 18th October 2026:

Has the enemy gathered against you? Are you afraid, or are you trusting God? Have you spoken to your sun and moon? And do you believe that God will hearken unto your voice and fight for you?
