BASIC SCRIPTURE: 1 CORINTHIANS 7:8-16

BASIC SCRIPTURE: WEDNESDAY, 14TH OCTOBER 2026 — 1 CORINTHIANS 7:8-16 (KJV)

  1. I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.

  2. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

  3. And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

  4. But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

  5. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

  6. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.

  7. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

  8. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.

  9. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — WEDNESDAY, 14TH OCTOBER 2026

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 7:15 — “But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.”

To the Unmarried and Widows (Verses 8-9):

Paul addresses the unmarried and the widows. He says it is good for them to remain unmarried as he is. Singleness is not a curse. It is not a punishment. It is not a second-class status. It is a gift. It is an opportunity. It is a season of undistracted devotion to the Lord. But Paul also acknowledges that not everyone has the gift of singleness. If they cannot contain, if they cannot control their desires, if they burn with passion, let them marry. Marriage is honourable. Marriage is good. Marriage is God’s design. It is better to marry than to burn. It is better to enter into a godly marriage than to fall into sexual sin.

To the Married (Verses 10-11):

Paul gives a command to the married. This is not his own opinion. This is from the Lord. Let not the wife depart from her husband. Let not the husband put away his wife. Marriage is a covenant. Marriage is a commitment. Marriage is for life. It is not to be broken. It is not to be abandoned. It is not to be discarded. But if she departs, if there is separation, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. Reconciliation is the goal. Restoration is the aim. Division is not the will of God. Separation is not the plan of God. God desires unity. God desires reconciliation. God desires restoration.

To the Rest (Verses 12-14):

Paul addresses a specific situation. A believer is married to an unbeliever. What should they do? Paul says, if the unbelieving spouse is pleased to dwell with the believer, let them not depart. Let them not leave. Let them not put them away. Why? Because the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife. The unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband. The presence of the believer in the marriage brings a sanctifying influence. It brings a blessing. It brings a covering. And the children are not unclean. They are holy. They are set apart. They are blessed. They are covered. The believer’s faith does not defile the marriage. It sanctifies it. It does not corrupt the children. It consecrates them.

If the Unbelieving Depart (Verse 15):

But if the unbelieving spouse departs, if they choose to leave, let them depart. The believer is not under bondage. The believer is not enslaved. The believer is not trapped. The believer is free. God has called us to peace. Not to conflict. Not to strife. Not to endless struggle. Not to a marriage that is a battleground. Peace is the calling. Peace is the goal. Peace is the will of God.

The Saving of the Spouse (Verse 16):

Paul asks a question. How do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? How do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife? The believer’s presence in the marriage is a testimony. It is a witness. It is a light. It is a seed. It may lead to the salvation of the unbelieving spouse. It may lead to their conversion. It may lead to their transformation. Do not give up on them. Do not abandon them. Do not lose hope. Your faith may be the very thing God uses to draw them to Himself.

The Lesson for Today:

Marriage is sacred. It is a covenant. It is a commitment. It is a gift from God. If you are unmarried, use your singleness for the glory of God. Serve Him without distraction. If you are married, honour your covenant. Be faithful. Be committed. Be patient. Be loving. If you are married to an unbeliever, do not leave them if they are willing to stay. Your presence may be their salvation. Your faith may be their hope. Your love may be their light. If they depart, let them go. You are not in bondage. God has called you to peace. Trust God with your marriage. Trust God with your spouse. Trust God with your future. He is faithful. He is good. He is in control.

Question for the Day — Wednesday, 14th October 2026:

Are you walking in wisdom concerning your marital status? Are you honouring your marriage covenant? And are you trusting God to save your spouse and sanctify your household?
