BASIC SCRIPTURE: JOHN 5: 1-15

BASIC SCRIPTURE: SATURDAY, 17TH OCTOBER 2026 — JOHN 5:1-15 (KJV)

  1. After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  2. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

  3. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

  4. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

  5. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

  6. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

  7. The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

  8. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

  9. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

  10. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

  11. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

  12. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

  13. And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

  14. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

  15. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — SATURDAY, 17TH OCTOBER 2026

Key Verse: John 5:8 — “Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.”

The Pool of Bethesda (Verses 1-4):

There was a pool in Jerusalem called Bethesda. It had five porches. In these porches lay a great multitude of impotent folk. The blind. The halt. The withered. They were waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water. Whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. This was a place of hope. It was a place of waiting. It was a place of desperation. It was a place of miracles.

The Man with an Infirmity (Verse 5):

There was a certain man there. He had an infirmity for thirty-eight years. Thirty-eight years. That is a long time. That is a lifetime for many. He had been sick for thirty-eight years. He had been waiting for thirty-eight years. He had been hoping for thirty-eight years. He had been disappointed for thirty-eight years. He had been overlooked for thirty-eight years. He had been alone for thirty-eight years. He had been in pain for thirty-eight years. He had been helpless for thirty-eight years.

Jesus Sees Him (Verse 6):

Jesus saw him lying there. Jesus knew that he had been in that case a long time. Jesus knew his history. Jesus knew his pain. Jesus knew his frustration. Jesus knew his disappointment. Jesus knew his hope deferred. And Jesus asked him a question. “Wilt thou be made whole?” It seems like an obvious question. Of course he wants to be made whole. But Jesus asked it anyway. He wanted the man to express his desire. He wanted the man to verbalize his hope. He wanted the man to confess his faith. He wanted the man to say yes.

The Man’s Excuse (Verse 7):

The impotent man answered. But he did not say yes. He did not say, “Yes, Lord, I want to be made whole.” He gave an excuse. He explained his situation. He said, “Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.” He had no one to help him. He was alone. He was overlooked. He was passed by. He was left behind. Others were healed. Others were made whole. But he was still there. Still waiting. Still hoping. Still disappointed.

The Word of Jesus (Verse 8):

Jesus did not rebuke him. Jesus did not condemn him. Jesus did not tell him to stop making excuses. Jesus simply spoke. “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.” It was a command. It was a word. It was an instruction. It was a declaration. It was a miracle in a sentence. Jesus did not need the pool. Jesus did not need the angel. Jesus did not need the troubled water. Jesus did not need the first position. Jesus did not need anyone’s help. Jesus is the pool. Jesus is the angel. Jesus is the troubled water. Jesus is the first position. Jesus is the help. Jesus is the Healer. Jesus is the Miracle Worker.

Immediately Made Whole (Verse 9):

And immediately the man was made whole. Immediately. Not gradually. Not slowly. Not over time. Immediately. He was made whole. He took up his bed. He walked. The miracle was instant. The healing was complete. The wholeness was total. After thirty-eight years of infirmity. After thirty-eight years of waiting. After thirty-eight years of disappointment. In a moment. In a second. In the twinkling of an eye. Jesus spoke. And everything changed.

The Objection of the Jews (Verses 10-13):

It was the sabbath day. The Jews saw the man carrying his bed. They objected. They said it was not lawful to carry a bed on the sabbath. They were more concerned about the law than the miracle. They were more concerned about the rule than the restoration. They were more concerned about tradition than transformation. The man answered. “He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.” He did not know who it was. Jesus had slipped away into the crowd. But he knew that the One who healed him had told him to carry his bed. And he obeyed.

The Warning of Jesus (Verse 14):

Later, Jesus found him in the temple. He said to him, “Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” Jesus healed the man. But Jesus also warned the man. He was made whole. He was restored. He was given a new beginning. But he was not to return to sin. He was not to go back to his old life. He was not to embrace his former ways. Because if he did, a worse thing would come upon him. The mercy of God is great. But it is not a license to sin. The grace of God is abundant. But it is not an excuse for disobedience.

The Lesson for Us:

Do you have a long-standing problem? An issue that has been there for years? A situation that has never changed? A condition that has never improved? A hope that has been deferred? Do not give up. Do not lose hope. Do not stop believing. Jesus sees you. Jesus knows your situation. Jesus knows how long you have been there. And He is asking you the same question. “Wilt thou be made whole?” Do not make excuses. Do not focus on the pool. Do not focus on the angel. Do not focus on the water. Do not focus on the people who have passed you by. Focus on Jesus. He is standing before you. He is speaking to you. He is healing you. He is restoring you. Rise. Take up your bed. Walk. And after you are made whole, sin no more. Live for Him. Serve Him. Follow Him. Glorify Him.

Question for the Day — Saturday, 17th October 2026:

Do you want to be made whole? Are you focused on the pool or on Jesus? And after you are made whole, will you sin no more?
