BASIC SCRIPTURE: 1 CORINTHIANS 10:6-13 (KJV)

6. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

7. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

8. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

9. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

10. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

11. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

12. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

4. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, let me learn from the examples of those who fell in the wilderness. Let their mistakes be my warning, not my replay.

2. Lord, deliver me from lusting after evil things. Let my heart be satisfied with You alone, not with the forbidden pleasures of this world.

3. Father, tear down every idol in my life. I refuse to sit down to eat and drink before false gods. I will not rise up to play while You are waiting for my worship.

4. Lord, keep me from sexual immorality. Let me not fall as others have fallen. Let the fear of losing thousands in one day keep me pure.

5. Father, forgive me for every time I have tempted Christ — testing His patience, His promises, or His presence. Let me not be destroyed by serpents of my own making.

6. Lord, silence the spirit of murmuring in my mouth. I will not complain against You, against Your servants, or against Your provision. Let me not be destroyed by the destroyer.

7. Father, let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. I take heed today. I do not trust my own strength. I cling to You.

8. Lord, every temptation that comes to me, make a way of escape. Let me not be trapped. Let me bear it. You are faithful, and I trust You.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that the things written in Scripture are my examples and admonition. I will not repeat the sins of those who fell in the wilderness.

2. I refuse to lust after evil things. My heart is set on things above, not on the passing pleasures of sin.

3. Every idol is cast down. I will not eat and drink before false gods. My worship belongs to the Lord alone.

4. I walk in purity. Fornication has no place in my body or my life. I will not fall as others have fallen.

5. I will not tempt Christ. I trust His timing, His word, and His ways. I will not test Him with my unbelief.

6. I silence every murmur. My mouth shall speak thanksgiving, not complaint. I will not be destroyed by the destroyer.

7. I take heed lest I fall. I do not trust in my own standing. My confidence is in God alone.

8. No temptation has taken me except what is common to man. God is faithful. He will make a way of escape. I shall bear it and I shall overcome.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse (1 Corinthians): 1 Corinthians 10:13 — “God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape.”

Key Verse (Matthew): Matthew 4:4 — “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

The Five Sins of the Wilderness (Verses 6-10):

The apostle Paul lists five specific sins that destroyed Israel in the wilderness. These are not just ancient history. They are examples for you today.

First, lusting after evil things. Israel craved what God had forbidden. They wanted the leeks and onions of Egypt more than the manna of heaven. Lust is not just sexual. It is any desire that overrides obedience to God.

Second, idolatry. They made a golden calf and worshipped it. They sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. Idolatry is giving to a created thing the worship that belongs to the Creator alone.

Third, fornication. Israel committed sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab. In one day, twenty-three thousand fell. Sexual sin is not a small matter. It destroys in a single day what took years to build.

Fourth, tempting Christ. They tested God, asking “Is the Lord among us or not?” They doubted His presence and challenged His patience. Tempting Christ is acting as if His promises are not true.

Fifth, murmuring. They complained against God, against Moses, against the manna, against the water. Murmuring is the sin that opens the door to the destroyer.

Why These Things Are Written (Verse 11):

Paul says these things happened to Israel as examples and are written for your admonition. You live in the end of the ages. You have no excuse to repeat their mistakes. The Bible is not just a history book. It is a warning manual. Read it. Heed it. Do not repeat it.

Let Him That Thinketh He Standeth Take Heed (Verse 12):

The most dangerous person is not the one who knows he is weak. The most dangerous person is the one who thinks he stands. Pride comes before the fall. Confidence in your own strength is the first step toward failure. Take heed. Watch yourself. Do not assume you are immune.

The Faithfulness of God (Verse 13):

This verse is one of the greatest promises in Scripture. Three truths stand out.

First, your temptation is common. You are not facing anything unique. No temptation has taken you but such as is common to man. Others have walked this path before you. Others have overcome. You can too.

Second, God is faithful. He will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able. God knows your limit. He will not allow the temptation to exceed your capacity to resist.

Third, there is a way of escape. With every temptation, God provides a way out. You are not trapped. You are not doomed to fall. Look for the escape. Take it.

Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone (Matthew 4:4):

Jesus quoted this verse when Satan tempted Him to turn stones into bread. The tempter wanted Jesus to meet His physical need outside of the Father’s will. Jesus answered with the Word. Physical bread sustains the body, but the Word of God sustains the soul. You need both. But if you must choose, choose the Word. It is more essential than food.
