Galatians 5:1-10 (KJV)

¹ Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

² Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.

³ For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

⁴ Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

⁵ For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

⁶ For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

⁷ Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

⁸ This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.

⁹ A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

📝 KEY COMMENTARY INSIGHTS

Verse 1: Stand Fast in Freedom
Paul sums up his argument from chapter 4: “For freedom Christ has set us free.”  The rabbis viewed the law as a positive “yoke,” but Paul equates it with a yoke of slavery—recalling how war captives were marched beneath an ox yoke as they entered bondage.  He urges believers not to return to any system that places them under obligation to earn salvation. 

Verses 2-4: The Danger of Legalism
Paul speaks forcefully: accepting circumcision as necessary for salvation means committing to obey the entire law, and in seeking justification by works, one is “cut off from Christ” and has “fallen from grace.”  These are strong words showing that law and grace cannot be mixed—it is one or the other. 

Verse 6: Faith Working Through Love
The only thing that truly matters in Christ is “faith working through love” (NKJV) or “faith active through love.”  This is not empty belief but a living, active faith that expresses itself in love for God and neighbor. This love becomes the “grand touchstone” of genuine faith. 

Verses 7-10: Running Well
Paul reminds them they “ran well” but were hindered from obeying the truth. The false teachers’ persuasion “does not come from the one who calls you.”  Using the proverb “A little leaven leavens the whole lump,” he warns that even a small false doctrine can corrupt the entire community.  Yet he expresses confidence that they will return to the truth.

1. Stand Firm in Freedom

• Pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for setting me free—not to sin, but from the bondage of sin and religious legalism. Help me to stand firm in the freedom You have purchased for me. I refuse to be entangled again by any yoke of bondage or man-made religious rules that add to Your finished work. 

2. Reject Every False Persuasion

• Pray: Father, I ask that You expose every false teaching and persuasion that tries to lead me away from the simplicity of the gospel. Let me not be deceived by those who confuse the truth. I receive the Spirit of wisdom and discernment to recognize error when I see it. 

3. Guard My Heart From Legalism

• Pray: Lord, keep me from the trap of trying to earn Your favor through good works or religious performance. I receive by faith the righteousness that comes only through Christ. Let me never fall from grace by trusting in my own efforts, but let me rest fully in what Jesus has done for me. 

4. Activate Faith That Works Through Love

• Pray: Holy Spirit, stir up in me a faith that is alive and active—faith that works through love. Let my love for God and for others be the evidence of genuine faith in my life. Help me to serve others in love and not use my freedom as an excuse for selfishness. 

5. Prayer for the Church

• Pray: Lord, I pray for Your Church worldwide—that we would protect the purity of the gospel of grace and not add burdens to Your people. Root out false teaching and confusion from our midst. Help Your Church to run the race well and not be hindered from obeying the truth.

📢 DAILY DECLARATIONS

Declare These Truths Over Your Life:

1. I stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free. I am free indeed! I refuse to submit again to any yoke of bondage—whether sin, fear, legalism, or man-made religion. 

2. Christ is my righteousness. I am not justified by the law or by my own efforts. I am declared righteous through faith in Christ alone. I have not fallen from grace—I stand firm in grace. 

3. I wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Through the Spirit, I eagerly anticipate the fulfillment of God’s promises. My hope is secure in Christ. 

4. In Christ, neither religious rituals nor the lack of them matters. What counts is my faith working through love. My faith is alive and active, expressing itself in love toward God and my neighbor. 

5. I am running the race well. I will not be hindered from obeying the truth. Every false persuasion and every voice of confusion that comes against my faith is exposed and rejected in Jesus’ name. 

6. A little leaven will not corrupt my faith. I guard my heart against false doctrine and remain grounded in the truth of God’s Word. 

7. I have confidence in the Lord. My mind is settled on Christ. I will not be tossed about by every wind of doctrine, but I remain anchored in the gospel of grace. 

8. Those who trouble God’s people will face God’s judgment. I trust the Lord to vindicate His truth and protect His Church from deception. 

9. I am free from the power of sin. Sin has no dominion over me. My flesh has no hold on me because I am held by God alone. I declare that fear, guilt, shame, and addiction have no control over my life. 

10. Today, I walk in the freedom Christ has given me. My life is in the hands of a sovereign God who loves me. I will walk differently because I know I am free indeed!

💬 ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Paul’s words in Galatians 5:1-10 are a passionate plea to guard the gospel of grace. The Galatians were tempted to add circumcision and law-keeping to faith in Christ—a subtle but deadly distortion of the gospel. Paul makes it clear that grace and law cannot coexist as grounds for justification. To mix them is to “fall from grace.” 

Yet Paul is not against good works. True faith, he says, “works through love” (v. 6). The freedom Christ gives is not license to sin but freedom from sin’s power, enabling us to serve one another in love.  This is the balance of the Christian life: resting completely in Christ’s finished work, yet actively expressing that faith through love-filled living.
