Ephesians 5:10-20 (KJV)

¹⁰ Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

¹² For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

¹³ But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

¹⁴ Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

¹⁵ See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

¹⁶ Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Verses 10-11: Proving and Reproving
Paul calls believers to “prove what is acceptable unto the Lord” —meaning to test, examine, and discern God’s will in every situation. This is an active, ongoing process of spiritual evaluation. Furthermore, we are to have “no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness” but rather reprove (expose) them. This doesn’t mean being hostile or judgmental toward sinners, but refusing to participate in or endorse sinful practices, while lovingly bringing them into the light.

Verses 12-14: Light Exposes Darkness
Sin prefers secrecy—it thrives in the shadows. Paul says it is shameful even to speak of what sinners do in secret. But light exposes everything. When we walk in the light, darkness is revealed and dealt with. Paul quotes an early Christian hymn: “Awake, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” This is a call to spiritual awakening and transformation.

Verses 15-16: Walk Wisely, Redeem the Time
“Walk circumspectly” means to walk carefully, accurately, and with precision. “Redeeming the time” (or “making the most of every opportunity”) carries the idea of buying up every moment as a precious commodity. Because “the days are evil,” we must be intentional and purposeful in how we live.

Verse 17: Understand God’s Will
Paul contrasts being “unwise” with “understanding what the will of the Lord is.” Knowing God’s will is not mysterious or unattainable—it is revealed in Scripture and discerned through the Spirit as we walk in obedience.

Verse 18: Be Filled With the Spirit
Paul gives a sharp contrast: “Do not get drunk with wine… but be filled with the Spirit.” Drunkenness leads to loss of control and excess; being filled with the Spirit leads to joyful, Spirit-led living. The Greek phrase implies a continual, ongoing filling—not a one-time event but a daily surrender to the Holy Spirit’s control.

9. I give thanks always. In every situation and for all things, I give thanks to God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. Gratitude is my lifestyle!

10. I am a light in this dark world. As a child of the light, I expose darkness and bring hope to those around me. I shine brightly for Jesus today!

Ephesians 5:10-20 is a powerful call to intentional, Spirit-filled living in a dark and evil world.

Paul paints a vivid contrast between the works of darkness and the life of light. The unfruitful works of darkness are characterized by secrecy, shame, and excess—things that cannot bear the exposure of light. In contrast, the life of light is marked by careful walking, redeemed time, and a deep understanding of God’s will.

At the heart of this passage is the command to “be filled with the Spirit.” This is not a suggestion—it is a command.
