BASIC SCRIPTURE: HEBREWS 11: 1- 8

HEBREWS 11:1–8 (KJV)

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

DEVOTIONAL REFLECTION

Hebrews 11 is often called the “Hall of Faith.” It defines faith, gives examples of faith from the Old Testament, and demonstrates that faith is the only way to please God.

Verse 1 gives the classic definition: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is not wishful thinking or blind optimism. It is substance—a real, solid reality in the spiritual realm—and evidence—proof of what has not yet manifested physically.

Verse 2 tells us that the elders (our spiritual ancestors) obtained a good report through faith. Their testimony was not based on their perfection but on their trust in God.

Verse 3 reveals that creation itself came into being through faith. The visible world was made from the invisible word of God. If God can create the universe out of nothing, He can certainly handle your situation.

Then the chapter gives a series of examples:

• Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice by faith (verse 4).

• Enoch pleased God and was translated without seeing death (verse 5).

• Noah built an ark based on a warning from God about things not yet seen (verse 7).

• Abraham obeyed and went out, not knowing where he was going (verse 8).

The central verse of this passage is verse 6: “But without faith it is impossible to please him.” This is non-negotiable. Anyone who comes to God must believe two things:

1. That He is (that God exists).

2. That He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Faith is not just belief in God’s existence—even demons believe that (James 2:19). Faith is believing that God rewards those who seek Him. He is not distant or indifferent. He responds to faith with reward.

5. Father, let me offer You a more excellent sacrifice than Cain—not the leftovers of my time, money, or devotion, but my first and my best. (Hebrews 11:4)

6. Lord, give me the testimony of Enoch: that I please You. Let my life, not just my words, be pleasing to You every day. (Hebrews 11:5)

7. Father, I believe that You are. I declare that You exist, You are alive, and You are sovereign over all things. (Hebrews 11:6)

8. Lord, I believe that You are a rewarder of them that diligently seek You. I seek Your face today, and I expect Your reward. (Hebrews 11:6)

9. Father, like Noah, give me the grace to move in fear when You warn me. Let me prepare for what is coming, even when I cannot see it yet. (Hebrews 11:7)

10. Lord, like Abraham, give me the obedience to go out when You call, even when I do not know where I am going. Let me trust Your voice more than my understanding. (Hebrews 11:8)

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that faith is the substance of my hopes and the evidence of what I cannot yet see. I walk by faith, not by sight.

2. I declare that through faith, I obtain a good report. My testimony is not based on my perfection but on my trust in God.

3. I declare that I understand by faith: the visible world was created by the invisible word of God. The same Word that created the universe is working in my life.

4. I declare that I offer God a more excellent sacrifice—not leftovers, but my first fruits, my time, my worship, and my obedience.

5. I declare that I please God. Like Enoch, I walk with God daily, and my life is a testimony of His goodness.

6. I declare that without faith it is impossible to please God. Therefore, I live by faith every single day.

7. I declare that I believe God is. He exists. He is alive. He is seated on the throne. He is not silent, and He is not absent.

8. I declare that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. I seek Him, and I expect my reward—healing, provision, direction, and breakthrough.

9. I declare that when God warns me, I will move in holy fear. I will prepare for what is coming, even if I cannot see it with my natural eyes.

10. I declare that when God calls me to go out, I will obey. I will go without knowing the destination, trusting the One who calls me.
