BASIC SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 7:15-25

BASIC SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 7:15-25 (KJV)

15. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, I confess that in my flesh dwells no good thing. Let me not trust in my own strength but in Your grace.

2. Lord, I struggle against sin that dwells in me. Deliver me from the law of sin and death.

3. Father, I delight in Your law after the inward man. Let my heart be set on Your righteousness.

4. Lord, I see another law warring against the law of my mind. Bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

5. Father, I cry out with Paul: “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”

6. Lord, I thank You that deliverance comes through Jesus Christ our Lord. Thank You for setting me free.

7. Father, let me not serve the law of sin with my flesh, but let me serve the law of God with my mind.

8. Lord, let the power of the Spirit overcome the power of the flesh in my life.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that in my flesh dwells no good thing. I do not trust in my own strength but in God’s grace.

2. The law of sin and death is broken over my life. I am delivered through Jesus Christ.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Romans 7:24-25 — “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The Struggle Within (Verses 15-19):

Paul describes the inner conflict that every believer experiences. He does what he does not want to do. He does not do what he wants to do. He is frustrated. He is conflicted. He is torn between two laws. The law of God in his mind. The law of sin in his flesh. He wants to do good. He wants to obey. He wants to please God. But sin is present. Sin is active. Sin is strong. He cannot overcome it in his own strength.

Not I, But Sin That Dwelleth in Me (Verses 17-20):

Paul makes a distinction. It is not his true self that sins. It is sin that dwells in him. He is not excusing himself. He is identifying the enemy. The sin nature is still present. It is not eradicated. It is not removed. It still operates. It still exerts influence. It still tempts. It still rebels. It still wars. The believer is not sinless. But sin no longer has dominion. It is present, but it is not master. It dwells, but it does not rule.

No Good Thing in My Flesh (Verse 18):

Paul makes a stark admission. In his flesh, there is no good thing. The flesh is not redeemable. It cannot be reformed. It cannot be improved. It cannot be educated. It cannot be religious. It cannot be moral. It is corrupt. It is fallen. It is sinful. It is dead. There is no good in it. The good comes from the Spirit. The good comes from Christ. The good comes from grace. The flesh cannot produce it.

A Law of Evil Present (Verse 21):

Paul finds a principle. A law. When he wants to do good, evil is present. It is always there. It is not a coincidence. It is not an exception. It is a law. It is a pattern. It is a reality. The presence of evil accompanies the desire for good. The flesh opposes the Spirit. Sin resists righteousness. Darkness fights light. The conflict is constant. The battle is ongoing.

Delight in the Law of God (Verse 22):

Despite the struggle, Paul delights in the law of God. He loves God’s law. He loves God’s will. He loves God’s commands. He loves God’s ways. His inward man is for God. His heart is for righteousness. His mind is for holiness. His spirit is for obedience. The conflict does not mean he is not a believer. It proves he is a believer. A non-believer does not struggle with sin. A believer does.

Another Law (Verse 23):

Paul sees another law. A law in his members. A law of sin. A law of death. It wars against his mind. It tries to bring him into captivity. It tries to enslave him. It tries to dominate him. It tries to control him. It is powerful. It is relentless. It is persistent. But it is not invincible. It can be overcome. It must be overcome. It is overcome by the Spirit.

O Wretched Man That I Am (Verse 24):

Paul cries out in desperation. He is wretched. He is miserable. He is trapped. He is captive. He is powerless. He cannot deliver himself. He cannot save himself. He cannot free himself. He cries out for help. He cries out for deliverance. He cries out for a savior. Who will deliver him? Not himself. Not the law. Not his efforts. Not his willpower. Who will deliver him from the body of this death?

I Thank God Through Jesus Christ (Verse 25):

Paul answers his own question. Deliverance comes through Jesus Christ. Not through the law. Not through works. Not through effort. Through Jesus Christ. He thanks God. He is grateful. He is free. The struggle is real. The battle is fierce. The conflict is ongoing. But the victory is sure. The deliverance is certain. Jesus Christ is the answer. He sets the captives free. He breaks the power of sin. He delivers from the body of this death.
