BASIC SCRIPTURE: 2 TIMOTHY 4:1-8

BASIC SCRIPTURE: 2 TIMOTHY 4:1-8 (KJV)

1. I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

2. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

5. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

6. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.

7. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

8. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

PRAYER POINTS

Key Verse: 2 Timothy 4:7 — “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

The Charge (Verse 1):

Paul gives Timothy a solemn charge. It is before God and the Lord Jesus Christ. God is the witness. Jesus is the judge. He will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom. This is a serious commission. It is not casual. It is not optional. It is a charge. It is a command. It is a responsibility.

Preach the Word (Verse 2):

The charge is to preach the word. Not opinions. Not traditions. Not philosophy. Not psychology. Not entertainment. The word. The word of God. The gospel. The truth. The whole counsel of God. And it is to be preached with urgency. “Be instant in season, out of season.” Preach when it is convenient. Preach when it is inconvenient. Preach when people want to hear. Preach when they do not want to hear. Preach when it is popular. Preach when it is unpopular. Preach when it is safe. Preach when it is dangerous. Preach always.

Reprove, Rebuke, Exhort (Verse 2):

The word is to be used in three ways. Reprove — correct error. Rebuke — confront sin. Exhort — encourage obedience. All with longsuffering and doctrine. Not harshly. Not impatiently. Not arrogantly. With patience. With love. With truth. Doctrine is the content. It is the foundation. It is the substance of the message.

The Time Will Come (Verses 3-4):

Paul prophesies a time when people will not endure sound doctrine. They will not want truth. They will not want correction. They will not want holiness. They will want teachers who tell them what they want to hear. They will heap to themselves teachers. They will gather them. They will seek them out. They will follow them. They will have itching ears. They will want to be entertained. They will want to be affirmed. They will want to be comfortable. They will turn away their ears from the truth. They will turn to fables. They will believe lies. They will embrace falsehood. This has happened in every generation. It is happening now.

Watch Thou in All Things (Verse 5):

Timothy is to watch. He is to be alert. He is to be vigilant. He is to be sober. He is to endure afflictions. He is to suffer for the gospel. He is to do the work of an evangelist. He is to preach the gospel. He is to make full proof of his ministry. He is to fulfill his calling. He is to complete his assignment.

I Am Ready to Be Offered (Verse 6):

Paul is ready. He is about to die. He is about to be poured out as a drink offering. His life is being offered to God. His death is a sacrifice. His martyrdom is a worship offering. He is ready. He has no fear. He has no regret. He has no doubt. He is ready to depart. He is ready to meet the Lord.

I Have Fought a Good Fight (Verse 7):

Paul looks back on his life. He has fought. It has been a fight. It has been a struggle. It has been a battle. But it has been a good fight. It has been a good fight of faith. It has been a good fight for the gospel. It has been a good fight against the enemy. It has been a good fight for the truth. He has not quit. He has not given up. He has not surrendered. He has fought.

I Have Finished My Course (Verse 7):

He has finished his race. He has completed his course. He has run the race set before him. He has not stopped. He has not turned back. He has not given up. He has finished. He has completed the course. He has done what God called him to do. He has gone where God sent him. He has spoken what God gave him. He has finished.

I Have Kept the Faith (Verse 7):

He has kept the faith. He has held onto it. He has guarded it. He has not let it go. He has not compromised it. He has not denied it. He has not abandoned it. He has kept it. He has believed it. He has lived it. He has preached it. He has died for it. He has kept the faith.

The Crown of Righteousness (Verse 8):

There is a reward waiting for Paul. A crown of righteousness. Not a crown of fame. Not a crown of power. Not a crown of riches. A crown of righteousness. It is given by the righteous Judge. It is given at the day of His appearing. And it is not just for Paul. It is for all who love His appearing. It is for all who long for His return. It is for all who have lived for His kingdom. It is for all who have fought the good fight. It is for all who have finished the course. It is for all who have kept the faith.

Are you preaching the word in season and out of season? Are you enduring afflictions and making full proof of your ministry? Will you be able to say with Paul, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”? Are you looking forward to the crown of righteousness?
