BASIC SCRIPTURE: 2 SAMUEL 6:1-8

BASIC SCRIPTURE: 2 SAMUEL 6:1-8 (KJV)

1. Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.

2. And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.

3. And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.

4. And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.

5. And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.

6. And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.

7. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

8. And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, let me seek Your presence with all my heart. Let me not be casual or careless when approaching You.

2. Lord, I repent of every time I have treated holy things with irreverence. Let me approach You with the fear of the Lord.

3. Father, let me not use the world’s methods to carry Your presence. Let me do things according to Your Word.

4. Lord, let me not be like Uzzah, who touched what was holy with unclean hands. Let me know when to withdraw and when to stand.

5. Father, let me not be displeased with Your judgments. Let me accept Your ways even when I do not understand.

6. Lord, let me learn from the breach at Perezuzzah — that Your holiness is not to be taken lightly.

7. Father, let my worship be acceptable to You. Let it be in spirit and in truth.

8. Lord, let me carry Your presence with reverence, not presumption.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that I seek the Lord’s presence with all my heart. I do not approach Him casually or carelessly.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: 2 Samuel 6:7 — “And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.”

The Ark of God (Verses 1-2):

The ark of God was the most sacred object in Israel. It represented the presence of God. It was the place where God dwelt between the cherubim. It was the symbol of His covenant. It was the throne of His glory. David wanted to bring it to Jerusalem. It was a noble desire. It was a good intention. David had thirty thousand chosen men. He had all the people with him. He had a new cart. He had music and instruments. He had joy. He had celebration. But he did not have obedience.

A New Cart (Verse 3):

The ark was placed on a new cart. It was a new cart. It was a good cart. It was a clean cart. It was not a common cart. It was new. It was specially prepared. But it was the wrong method. The ark was meant to be carried on the shoulders of the Levites. It was meant to be carried by the priests. It was not meant to be carried on a cart. David used a Philistine method. The Philistines had returned the ark on a cart. David imitated them. He used the world’s method. He was sincere. He was joyful. He was zealous. But he was wrong.

Uzzah’s Hand (Verse 6-7):

When they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, the oxen stumbled. The ark shook. Uzzah put forth his hand to steady the ark. He took hold of it. He touched it. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against him. God smote him, and he died. Uzzah’s intention was good. He did not mean to dishonor God. He was trying to protect the ark. He was trying to keep it from falling. But he violated a clear command. The ark was not to be touched. Only the priests could touch it. The penalty for touching it was death. Uzzah touched it. Uzzah died.

The Error (Verse 7):

The word “error” can also mean “rashness” or “irreverence.” Uzzah acted presumptuously. He did not think. He did not consult. He did not consider the holiness of God. He acted instinctively. He acted emotionally. He acted without reverence. And his error cost him his life.

The Breach (Verse 8):

David was displeased. He was angry. He was upset. He did not understand. He was disappointed. He was afraid. He called the place Perezuzzah — the breach of Uzzah. The name was a memorial. It was a reminder. It was a warning. God had made a breach. He had broken through. He had shown His holiness. He had shown His judgment. And David was not exempt. He was the king. He was sincere. He was zealous. But he was not above the law. He was not above the holiness of God.

The Lesson:

Good intentions do not excuse disobedience. Sincere worship does not replace holy obedience. Joyful celebration does not excuse irreverence. The presence of God is holy. The presence of God is not to be handled carelessly. The presence of God is not to be manipulated. The presence of God is not to be touched with unclean hands. God is not impressed by our methods. He is impressed by our obedience. He is not impressed by our sincerity. He is impressed by our submission.
