MATTHEW 7:1–5 (KJV)

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

DEVOTIONAL REFLECTION

These two passages form a powerful twin warning against the sin of judgmentalism. In Matthew 7, Jesus forbids a critical, condemning spirit toward others. He uses the vivid image of a person with a “beam” (a large log) in their own eye trying to remove a “mote” (a tiny speck) from a brother’s eye. The problem is not helping others with their faults—that is called restoration (Galatians 6:1). The problem is hypocrisy: condemning in others what we excuse in ourselves. Jesus commands us to deal with our own sin first; then we will “see clearly” to help others.

James echoes this warning by equating evil speaking and judging with setting oneself above God’s law. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge—God Himself. When we judge our brother, we usurp God’s throne. James is not forbidding all discernment or church discipline (see Matthew 18:15–17), but he is forbidding the arrogant, censorious, unloving spirit that tears down rather than builds up. The one who judges another places themselves in the place of God, who alone knows all hearts and has the right to save or destroy.

Together, these verses call us to humility, self-examination, and love. Before we point out another’s fault, we must look inward. Before we speak evil of a brother, we must remember that we too stand under grace.

PRAYER POINTS

(Based on Matthew 7:1–5 and James 4:11–12)

1. Father, forgive me for every time I have judged others harshly while overlooking my own faults. I repent of a critical and condemning spirit. (Matthew 7:1)

2. Lord, help me to remember that the same standard I use to judge others will be used against me. Give me mercy, that I may show mercy. (Matthew 7:2)

3. Father, open my eyes to see the beam in my own eye—the hidden sins, pride, and hypocrisy that blind me. Do not let me be a hypocrite. (Matthew 7:3–4)

4. Lord, before I try to correct anyone else, help me to first cast out every beam from my own life. Purify me by Your Word and Spirit. (Matthew 7:5)

5. Father, give me clear vision after my own heart is cleansed. Then use me to help restore others gently, without pride or condemnation. (Matthew 7:5)

6. Lord, guard my tongue from speaking evil of any brother or sister in Christ. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of my mouth. (James 4:11)

7. Father, deliver me from the sin of judging the law—setting my own opinions above Your Word. Make me a doer of the law, not a judge of it. (James 4:11)

8. Lord, I acknowledge that You alone are the Lawgiver and Judge. You alone have the power to save and to destroy. I lay down my right to judge others. (James 4:12)

9. Father, whenever I am tempted to criticize or condemn another believer, remind me of my own imperfections and Your grace toward me. (James 4:12)

10. Lord, fill my heart with love, humility, and compassion. Let me build up my brothers and sisters, not tear them down. Let my words bring life, not death.

1. I declare that I will not judge others, for with the same judgment I judge, I will be judged. I choose mercy over criticism.

2. I declare that the measure I use for others will be measured back to me. Therefore, I will measure out grace, patience, and love.

3. I declare that I will not focus on the small faults of others while ignoring the large faults in my own life. I first examine myself.

4. I declare that I am not a hypocrite. I cast out the beam from my own eye before I attempt to help my brother with his mote.

5. I declare that after I have dealt with my own sin, God will give me clear vision and wisdom to help restore others in love.

6. I declare that I will not speak evil of any brother or sister. My tongue is guarded by the Holy Spirit, and I speak only what builds up.

7. I declare that I am a doer of the Word, not a judge of the law. I submit to God’s authority and not to my own opinions.

8. I declare that there is only one Lawgiver and Judge—the Lord Almighty. I am not Him. I release every person from my judgment.

9. I declare that I walk in humility, knowing that I too am saved by grace and stand only because God holds me up.

10. I declare that my words and thoughts toward others shall be ruled by love, for love covers a multitude of sins.
