Acts 23:1-12 (KJV)
1 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.
3 Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?
4 And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest?
5 Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
9 And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
10 And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
11 And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.
12 And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.
Numbers 23:7-8 (KJV)
7 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.
8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the Lord hath not defied?
PART TWO: REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURES
Acts 23:1-12 – Divine Protection in the Midst of Conspiracy
This passage records a dramatic moment in Paul’s life. He stood before the Sanhedrin, the highest Jewish council, facing accusations and threats. Yet in the midst of this turmoil, God’s protection and purpose were evident.
A Good Conscience (verse 1)
Paul declared that he had lived “in all good conscience before God.” This was not self-righteousness but the confidence of a man who knew he was walking in obedience to God. A clear conscience is a powerful defense when facing accusations.
The High Priest’s Attack (verse 2)
Ananias commanded that Paul be struck on the mouth. This was illegal, contrary to Jewish law. Paul’s response was sharp, but when he realized Ananias was the high priest, he apologized, showing respect for authority even when it was misused.
Divine Wisdom (verses 6-9)
Paul perceived that the council was divided between Sadducees and Pharisees. He used this division to his advantage by declaring his belief in the resurrection. The Pharisees, who believed in resurrection, sided with him. What could have been a unanimous condemnation became a divided argument.
The Lord’s Encouragement (verse 11)
In the night, the Lord stood by Paul and said, “Be of good cheer.” This was not a deliverance from trouble but a promise of presence through trouble. Paul would testify in Rome. The journey was not over; the purpose was not defeated.
The Conspiracy (verse 12)
Despite the division in the council, a group of Jews bound themselves with a curse to kill Paul. Human conspiracy could not stop divine purpose.
Numbers 23:7-8 – The Power of Unbreakable Blessing
Balaam was hired by Balak, king of Moab, to curse Israel. But no curse could stand against God’s blessing.
The Attempt to Curse (verse 7)
Balak brought Balaam from Aram to curse Israel. The enemy’s plan was clear: to speak words of destruction against God’s people.
The Question of Balaam (verse 8)
Balaam’s question reveals a profound truth: “How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the Lord hath not defied?”
No one can curse what God has blessed. No one can defy what God has established. The blessing of God is unbreakable.
PART THREE: KEY THEMES FOR PRAYER
1. A Clear Conscience
Paul’s confidence came from a clear conscience. When we walk in obedience, we have nothing to fear from accusations.
2. Divine Wisdom in the Face of Opposition
Paul used wisdom to navigate the division in the council. God gives wisdom to those who ask.
3. The Lord’s Presence in Trouble
The Lord did not remove Paul from the situation, but He stood by him. His presence is our peace.
4. No Curse Against the Blessed
What God has blessed, no one can curse. Our blessing is unbreakable.
5. Conspiracy Cannot Stop Destiny
The Jews conspired to kill Paul, but God had already declared that Paul would testify in Rome. Human plots cannot override divine purpose.
