PART ONE: SCRIPTURE READING

Psalm 91:1-10 (KJV)

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

PART TWO: REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURE

Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful passages in all of Scripture concerning divine protection. It is a psalm of confidence, a declaration of trust, and a promise of safety for those who dwell in the presence of God.

The Secret Place (verse 1)

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

The secret place is not a physical location but a spiritual reality—intimacy with God. Dwelling implies more than visiting; it is abiding, remaining, making one’s home in God’s presence. The result is being under His shadow—a place of protection, rest, and covering.

The Declaration of Trust (verse 2)

“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

This is personal. The psalmist does not merely know about God; he declares his relationship. Refuge speaks of safety in times of danger. Fortress speaks of strength in times of attack. Trust is the active response of faith.

Deliverance from Snares and Pestilence (verse 3)

“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”

The fowler is a trapper who sets hidden snares. God delivers from hidden traps. Noisome pestilence speaks of deadly diseases. God protects from what others cannot see or escape.

The Covering of Wings (verse 4)

“He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”

This is an image of tenderness—a mother bird covering her young. God’s protection is not cold; it is intimate. His truth is the shield that deflects every arrow.

Freedom from Fear (verses 5-6)

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.”

Four sources of fear are named:
– Terror by night – the unknown, the unseen
– Arrow by day – sudden attack, visible threat
– Pestilence in darkness – hidden disease, secret danger
– Destruction at noonday – open devastation

None of these need be feared by the one who dwells in God’s presence.

Mass Protection (verse 7)

“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”

This is not a promise of immunity from all suffering, but of divine preservation. Many may fall around you, but you are kept safe. The scale of protection matches the scale of danger—thousands fall, but you are spared.

The Reward of the Wicked (verse 8)

“Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”

You will witness God’s justice. You will see the outcome of evil without being consumed by it.

The Condition of Protection (verses 9-10)

“Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.”

The condition is stated clearly: you must make the Lord your habitation. Dwelling leads to deliverance. Abiding leads to safety.

PART THREE: KEY THEMES FOR PRAYER

1. Dwelling in the Secret Place

Protection is not automatic; it is the result of intimacy. Those who dwell in God’s presence are covered by His shadow.

2. Declaration of Trust

Faith is active. We must say, “He is my refuge, my fortress, my God.” Words of faith establish reality.

3. Deliverance from Hidden Snares

God protects us from traps we cannot see—the schemes of the enemy, the hidden dangers that others fall into.

4. The Covering of His Wings

God’s protection is tender and intimate. We are not kept at a distance; we are brought under His wings.

5. Freedom from Fear

Fear is the enemy’s weapon, but the one who trusts God does not fear. Not terror, not arrows, not pestilence, not destruction.

6. Mass Protection

When danger is widespread, God’s people are preserved. Thousands may fall, but you shall not.

7. The Condition: Habitation

The promise is conditional: “Because thou hast made the Lord thy habitation.” Those who abide in Him receive His protection.

1. Father, deliver me from every snare of the fowler. Let every hidden trap be exposed and destroyed, in Jesus’ name.

1. Father, though thousands fall at my side, let it not come near me. Let Your hand of protection be upon me, in Jesus’ name.
