17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.

18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

19 And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

21 And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.

22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

23 And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

25 And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

This passage records two significant military victories of David over the Philistines. Several powerful themes emerge that can guide our prayers:

• Enemy Response to Anointing: The moment David was anointed king over all Israel (v. 17), the Philistines came to seek him. Blessing and promotion often attract opposition. Expect attacks when you step into your God-given position .

• The Principle of Inquiry: In both battles, David’s first action was to “enquire of the LORD.” He did not rely on his previous victory, his army, or his own wisdom. He sought fresh direction from God for every new battle .

• Different Battles, Different Strategies: God gave David two different strategies for the same enemy in the same location. The first victory was a direct frontal assault. The second required waiting, circling behind, and moving only when he heard “the sound of a going” (marching) in the mulberry trees. Yesterday’s victory strategy will not necessarily work for today’s battle .

• Complete Victory: David did not just defeat the enemy; he burned their images (v. 21), destroying their idols and false gods. He also pursued them completely, “from Geba until thou come to Gazer” (v. 25) .

1. For Awareness of Enemy Tactics: Pray for spiritual discernment to recognize when the enemy rises up against you, especially in seasons of new blessing, promotion, or responsibility. “Lord, make me alert to the schemes of the enemy when he comes to seek me.”

2. For the Spirit of Inquiry: Ask God to cultivate in you the habit of seeking His face before every decision, big or small. Pray against the temptation to rely on past experiences or your own understanding. “Father, teach me to enquire of You in all things.”

3. For Fresh Strategy and Direction: Pray for sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s leading, especially when facing repeated challenges. Ask God to show you when to move forward directly and when to wait for His signal. “Lord, give me new strategies for new battles. Help me not to fight today’s war with yesterday’s weapons.”

4. For Destruction of Idols: Pray that every enemy image, every false stronghold, and every idol raised against the knowledge of God in your life would be completely burned up and destroyed .

5. For the Sound of Heaven: Pray for spiritual ears to hear the “sound of a going” in the mulberry trees—the sound of the Spirit’s movement, the sound of heaven’s army marching. Ask for the wisdom to move only when God goes before you .

6. For Complete Victory: Do not pray for partial deliverance. Ask God to give you complete victory over the enemy, pursuing him until he is fully defeated and driven from your territory .
