BASIC SCRIPTURE: GALATIANS 2:11-21

BASIC SCRIPTURE: WEDNESDAY, 23RD SEPTEMBER 2026 — GALATIANS 2:11-21 (KJV)

11. But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

12. For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

13. And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

14. But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

15. We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

16. Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

17. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

18. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

19. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

20. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

21. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

1. Father, give me the courage to stand for the truth of the gospel, even when it means confronting those in error.

2. Lord, deliver me from the fear of man that leads to compromise and dissimulation.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — WEDNESDAY, 23RD SEPTEMBER 2026

Key Verse: Galatians 2:20 — “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

Paul Withstands Peter (Verse 11):

Paul confronted Peter. He withstood him to his face. He opposed him publicly. He rebuked him openly. Why? Because Peter was to be blamed. He was in the wrong. He was acting hypocritically. He was compromising the truth. Paul did not ignore it. He did not overlook it. He did not excuse it. He addressed it. He confronted it. He corrected it. This took courage. Peter was an apostle. Peter was a leader. Peter was a pillar of the church. But Paul did not fear him. He feared God more. He stood for the truth.

Peter’s Hypocrisy (Verses 12-13):

Peter had been eating with the Gentiles. He had been fellowshipping with them. He had been treating them as equals. He had been embracing them as brothers. But when certain men came from James, he withdrew. He separated himself. He stopped eating with the Gentiles. He stopped fellowshipping with them. He stopped treating them as equals. He feared the circumcision party. He feared the Jews. He feared their criticism. He feared their rejection. He feared their disapproval. And he compromised. And the other Jews dissembled with him. They joined his hypocrisy. They pretended along with him. And even Barnabas was carried away. Even Barnabas, the son of consolation, was led astray. The influence of hypocrisy is powerful. It can lead even the strongest astray.

Paul’s Rebuke (Verse 14):

Paul saw what was happening. He saw that they were not walking uprightly. He saw that they were not acting according to the truth of the gospel. He spoke to Peter before them all. He did not take him aside privately. He did not send a message. He did not ignore it. He confronted it publicly. He said, “If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?” Peter was living like a Gentile. He was eating with Gentiles. He was fellowshipping with Gentiles. He was not keeping the Jewish customs. So why was he forcing the Gentiles to live like Jews? Why was he requiring them to be circumcised? Why was he requiring them to keep the law? Why was he adding works to grace? Why was he compromising the gospel?

Justified by Faith (Verses 15-16):

Paul made a clear statement. “We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Justification is not by works. It is not by law. It is not by effort. It is not by merit. It is by faith in Jesus Christ. It is by trusting in His finished work. It is by believing in His death and resurrection. The law cannot save. The law cannot justify. The law cannot make righteous. Only Christ can. Only faith can. Only grace can.

Dead to the Law (Verses 17-19):

Paul asked, “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.” If we are justified by faith, and then we sin, does that make Christ a promoter of sin? No. God forbid. He said, “For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.” Paul was dead to the law. The law was not his master. The law was not his judge. The law was not his savior. He was dead to it. He was free from it. He was released from it. He was no longer under it. He was living for God. He was living by grace. He was living by faith.

Crucified with Christ (Verse 20):

This is one of the most powerful verses in Scripture. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Paul was crucified. His old self was crucified. His old nature was crucified. His old life was crucified. His old desires were crucified. His old ambitions were crucified. His old identity was crucified. But he still lived. He was alive. But it was not him. It was Christ. Christ lived in him. Christ dwelt in him. Christ manifested through him. Christ spoke through him. Christ acted through him. Christ loved through him. Christ served through him. And the life he lived in the flesh, he lived by faith. He lived by trusting in Jesus. He lived by relying on Jesus. He lived by depending on Jesus. He lived by faith in the One who loved him and gave Himself for him.

Not Frustrating Grace (Verse 21):

Paul said, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” He did not frustrate grace. He did not nullify grace. He did not reject grace. He did not despise grace. He did not add to grace. He did not mix grace with law. He did not mix grace with works. He did not mix grace with human effort. If righteousness could come by the law, then Christ died for nothing. His death was unnecessary. His sacrifice was pointless. But righteousness does not come by the law. It comes by faith. It comes by grace. It comes by Christ. His death was necessary. His sacrifice was effectual. His grace is sufficient.
