BASIC SCRIPTURE: ACTS 9:1-9, 17-18 (KJV)

1. And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

2. And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

3. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

4. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

5. And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

6. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

7. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

8. And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

9. And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

10. And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

11. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, as You met Saul on the road to Damascus, meet me in my journey. Let me encounter Your presence in a life-changing way.

2. Lord, shine Your light into every dark place in my life. Let every blindness be removed and every ignorance be exposed.

3. Father, when I hear Your voice, let me tremble and be astonished. Let me respond as Saul did: “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”

4. Lord, I submit to Your will. Speak to me and tell me what I must do. Let me not resist Your call.

5. Father, let every scale of spiritual blindness fall from my eyes. Let me see clearly as You see.

6. Lord, fill me with the Holy Ghost as You filled Saul through Ananias. Let me be empowered for Your service.

7. Father, let me arise from the darkness and be baptized into Christ. Let my life be transformed by Your grace.

8. Lord, use me as You used Saul — to become a chosen vessel to bear Your name before nations.

The Persecutor (Verses 1-2):

Saul was a zealous persecutor of the church. He was breathing out threatenings and slaughter. He was not passive. He was active. He was not indifferent. He was aggressive. He went to the high priest. He asked for letters to Damascus. He wanted to find followers of the Way. He wanted to bind them and bring them to Jerusalem. He was on a mission of destruction. He was determined. He was focused. He was relentless. He was confident. He thought he was serving God. He thought he was doing the right thing. He was sincere. He was zealous. He was wrong.

The Light (Verse 3):

As he journeyed, a light shone from heaven. It was sudden. It was bright. It was overwhelming. It was not a natural light. It was not the sun. It was the glory of God. It was the presence of Christ. It stopped him in his tracks. It blinded him. It brought him to his knees. He fell to the earth. He was humbled. He was broken. He was confronted by the reality of God. He was met by Jesus.

The Voice (Verses 4-5):

He heard a voice. “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” The voice was personal. It called him by name. It repeated his name. It was direct. It was pointed. It was questioning. Saul asked, “Who art thou, Lord?” The answer came: “I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.” Saul was persecuting Jesus. He was persecuting the church. He was persecuting the body of Christ. And Jesus identified Himself with the church. To persecute the church is to persecute Christ. To attack believers is to attack Christ. They are one. They are His body.

Kicking Against the Pricks (Verse 5):

Jesus said, “It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” A prick was a goad. It was a sharp stick used to prod animals. It was painful. It was frustrating. It was pointless. Saul was resisting God. He was fighting against God’s will. He was fighting against God’s plan. He was fighting against God’s purpose. He was hurting himself. He was exhausting himself. He was going nowhere. He was fighting a losing battle.

Lord, What Wilt Thou Have Me to Do? (Verse 6):

Saul’s response was immediate. He trembled. He was astonished. He was broken. He submitted. He asked, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” This is the most important question a person can ask. It is the question of surrender. It is the question of submission. It is the question of obedience. It is the question of discipleship. It is the question that changes everything. Saul was no longer the persecutor. He was now the servant. He was no longer the enemy. He was now the disciple. He was no longer the rebel. He was now the obedient.

The Blindness (Verses 8-9):

Saul arose. His eyes were opened. But he saw nothing. He was blind. He had to be led by the hand. He was brought into Damascus. He was without sight for three days. He did not eat or drink. He was fasting. He was praying. He was waiting. He was broken. He was humbled. He was being prepared. He was being transformed. He was being called. He was being commissioned.

Ananias and the Healing (Verses 17-18):

Ananias came. He laid his hands on Saul. He called him “Brother Saul.” He spoke the word of the Lord. He said, “Receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.” Immediately, scales fell from his eyes. He received his sight. He arose. He was baptized. He was filled with the Spirit. He was healed. He was transformed. He was commissioned. He was a new creation. He would become the greatest missionary in history. He would write most of the New Testament. He would suffer for Christ. He would die for Christ. All because he met Jesus on the road to Damascus.

Question for the Day:

Have you met Jesus on your journey? Have you been stopped by His light? Have you heard His voice? Have you asked, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” And are you obeying what He tells you?
