BASIC SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 5: 9-24

BASIC SCRIPTURE: TUESDAY, 8TH SEPTEMBER 2026 — MATTHEW 5:9-24 (KJV)

9. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

13. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

17. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21. Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22. But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

24. Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

PRAYER POINTS — TUESDAY, 8TH SEPTEMBER 2026

1. Father, make me a peacemaker. Let me be called a child of God.

2. Lord, when I am persecuted for righteousness’ sake, let me rejoice and be exceeding glad, knowing that great is my reward in heaven.

3. Father, let me be the salt of the earth. Let me not lose my savour, but be a preserving influence in the world.

4. Lord, let me be the light of the world. Let my light so shine before men that they may see my good works and glorify You.

5. Father, let my righteousness exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. Let me be righteous in heart, not just in outward appearance.

6. Lord, deliver me from anger without a cause. Let me not be in danger of judgment because of uncontrolled anger.

7. Father, help me to reconcile with my brother before I bring my gift to the altar. Let me not offer gifts while holding offences.

DECLARATIONS — TUESDAY, 8TH SEPTEMBER 2026

1. I declare that I am a peacemaker. I am called a child of God.

3. I am the salt of the earth. I do not lose my savour. I am a preserving influence in the world.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — TUESDAY, 8TH SEPTEMBER 2026

Key Verse: Matthew 5:16 — “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

The Beatitudes (Verses 9-12):

Jesus continues His teaching on blessedness. The peacemakers are blessed. They shall be called the children of God. They reflect the character of their Father. They bring reconciliation. They heal divisions. They make peace. The persecuted are blessed. They suffer for righteousness’ sake. They are reviled and persecuted for Christ’s sake. They are to rejoice. They are to be exceeding glad. Great is their reward in heaven. They join the company of the prophets. They are not alone. They are not forgotten. They are not forsaken. Their reward is certain.

Salt of the Earth (Verse 13):

Jesus calls His followers the salt of the earth. Salt preserves. It prevents decay. It gives flavour. It creates thirst. Believers are to be a preserving influence in the world. They are to prevent moral decay. They are to bring the flavour of Christ. They are to create a thirst for God. But salt can lose its savour. It can become useless. It is then good for nothing. It is cast out. It is trodden underfoot. Believers must maintain their distinctiveness. They must not become like the world.

Light of the World (Verses 14-16):

Jesus calls His followers the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. A candle is not put under a bushel. It is put on a candlestick. It gives light to all in the house. Believers are to let their light shine. They are to do good works. They are to be visible. They are to be influential. They are to point others to God. When men see their good works, they glorify their Father in heaven. The light is not for self-glory. It is for God’s glory.

The Law and the Prophets (Verses 17-20):

Jesus did not come to destroy the law. He came to fulfill it. The law is not abolished. It is established. Every jot and tittle will be fulfilled. Those who break the least commandment and teach others to do so are least in the kingdom. Those who do and teach them are great. The righteousness of the believer must exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. It is not just external. It is internal. It is a righteousness of the heart.

Anger and Reconciliation (Verses 21-24):

Jesus addresses the commandment against murder. Murder begins in the heart. Anger is the seed of murder. Uncontrolled anger is dangerous. Calling a brother Raca (empty-headed) or fool is a serious offense. It puts one in danger of judgment. And before you bring your gift to the altar, you must be reconciled to your brother. If your brother has something against you, leave your gift. Go and be reconciled. Then come and offer your gift. Reconciliation is more important than ritual. Relationships are more important than religious offerings. Worship requires right relationships. God is not pleased with gifts when there is unresolved conflict.
