Royal Law

KEY VERSE
“If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well” (James 2:8).

Bible Reading:
James 2:8-13 (KJV)

8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

MESSAGE

A personality identified only as “Dr. Mitchell” once sought to impress upon believers that they were not under the Law when they are in Christ, but we’re under a new law — the law of LOVE. He used this to illustrate: “In America there is a law stating a woman must take care of her child. So, a man comes to a new mother’s home. He says, “Are you taking care of your baby? The Law says you have to.” The woman, tenderly holding her baby, said, “I don’t need a law to make me take care of my baby.” Why? Because she loves her baby! She feeds him, holds him, changes him because she loves him. I no longer need the Law because I’m under Christ — a law of LOVE.”

In the passage today is a law. James referred to the command, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” as the “royal law,” because it came from the King of kings and governs all relationships in the kingdom of God. This law, rooted in Leviticus 19:18 and affirmed by Jesus in Matthew 22:39, serves as a guiding principle for Christian conduct, including not showing favouritism, living as those who will be judged under the law of liberty and showing mercy to people.

Showing favouritism for instance is a serious transgression of God’s law because it damages the integrity of our witness, just as a single crack compromises a windowpane. Furthermore, the law of liberty frees us not to live as we please, but as we ought to, using liberty to serve others in love. Finally, showing mercy demonstrates the grace we’ve received from Christ.

Today, the evidence of loving our neighbours as ourselves can be demonstrated by actively seeking their good, showing kindness, mercy, and treating them with dignity. This, ultimately, will reflect the true freedom we profess in Christ.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The true test of faith is not just how much we know but how much we love

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
Revelation 15-17

COMMENTARY

1. The Royal Law of Love – James calls the command to love our neighbour as ourselves the “royal law” because it comes from the King of kings. It is the governing principle of God’s kingdom. This law is not burdensome; it flows from a heart transformed by grace.

2. The Sin of Favouritism – Showing partiality is a violation of the royal law. James warns that favouritism damages our witness and makes us transgressors. We cannot claim to love God while showing prejudice against others. True faith treats all people with dignity and respect.

3. The Law of Liberty – The law of liberty frees us not to live as we please but to serve others in love. Freedom in Christ is not a license for selfishness; it is the power to love sacrificially. We are judged by this law of liberty, and mercy triumphs over judgment.

4. The Evidence of Love – The devotional calls us to demonstrate love by actively seeking the good of others, showing kindness, mercy, and treating them with dignity. This reflects the true freedom we profess in Christ. Love is the proof of genuine faith.

5. The DCLM Ministry’s Call to Love – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes love as the defining mark of a believer. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that love is the fulfilling of the law and the evidence of true discipleship. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to love their neighbours as themselves.

About DCLM and Daily Manna

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) was founded in 1973 by Pastor Dr. W.F. Kumuyi. From a small Bible study of 15 students in Lagos, it has grown into a global ministry with churches across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. The ministry emphasizes holiness, prayer, Bible study, and love for others.

DCLM Daily Manna is a daily devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi. Each edition provides Scripture reading, exposition, and practical application to guide believers in their daily walk with God. The devotional consistently calls readers to fulfill the royal law of love.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, help me to love my neighbour as myself. Forgive me for any favouritism or prejudice. Teach me to use my liberty in Christ to serve others in love. May my life be a demonstration of Your mercy and grace. Let love be the mark of my discipleship. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
