Love That Redeems

KEY VERSE
“Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine” (Hosea 3:1).
Bible Reading:
Hosea 3:1-5 (KJV)
1 Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.
2 So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley:
3 And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.
4 For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:
5 Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.
MESSAGE
The story is told of how a couple married for 15 years began having more than usual disagreements. They wanted to make their marriage work and agreed on an idea the wife had. For one month they planned to drop a slip in a “Fault” box. The boxes would provide a place to let the other know about daily irritations. The wife was diligent in her efforts and approach: “leaving the jelly top off the jar,” “wet towels on the shower floor,” “dirty socks not in hamper,” on and on until the end of the month. After dinner, at the end of the month, they exchanged boxes. The husband reflected on what he had done wrong. Then the wife opened her box and began reading. They were all the same, the message on each slip was, “I love you!”.
The story in our passage is one of the most powerful pictures of God’s unrelenting love in the Bible. Despite betraying him, God commanded Hosea to go back and marry, Gomer, his adulterous wife. Though uncomfortable and painful, it mirrors God’s continued love for Israel in spite of her repeated unfaithfulness of chasing after other gods and breaking the covenant with the Lord. Hosea did not only comply, he went ahead to buy her back, a symbol of God’s redeeming grace, just as Jesus paid our price with His own life to bring us back to Himself.
Hosea’s love story is a deeper spiritual truth of God’s love to us even though we don’t deserve it. Despite our spiritual wanderings, God sent His Son to die for our redemption, and He patiently waits for our return. Today, if you can turn back to God with sincere a heart, He will welcome, renew, and restore your relationship with Him.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God’s love is not just emotional, it’s active, redemptive, and full of hope
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
Revelation 18-20
COMMENTARY
1. A Picture of Unrelenting Love – Hosea’s love for Gomer mirrors God’s love for Israel. Despite her adultery, God commanded Hosea to love her and buy her back. This is a powerful picture of God’s unrelenting love for us, even when we are unfaithful. His love does not give up.
2. The Cost of Redemption – Hosea bought Gomer back for fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley. This was the price of a slave. It symbolizes the price Jesus paid for our redemption—His own life. Redemption is costly, but God was willing to pay the price for us.
3. The Call to Return – Gomer was told to abide with Hosea and not play the harlot. Similarly, God calls us to return to Him and forsake our spiritual wanderings. He waits patiently for us to come back, and when we do, He restores us.
4. God’s Love Is Active and Redemptive – The devotional emphasizes that God’s love is not just emotional; it is active and redemptive. He doesn’t just feel love; He acts to save us. He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins. His love is full of hope.
5. The DCLM Ministry’s Message of Redemption – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes God’s redeeming love and the call to return to Him. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that no matter how far we have wandered, God’s love can bring us back. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to return to God and experience His restoring grace.
