BASIC SCRIPTURES: PSALM 4: 1- 8; PSALM 46: 10

BASIC SCRIPTURE: PSALM 4:1-8 (KJV)

1. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

2. O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.

3. But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.

4. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

5. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

6. There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

7. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.

8. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

PRAYER POINTS

Hear Me When I Call (Psalm 4:1):

The psalmist begins with a cry for help. “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness.” He appeals to God as the source of his righteousness. He does not come in his own merit. He comes in God’s righteousness. He pleads for mercy. He asks for an answer. He calls upon the God who has already enlarged him in distress. God has made room for him before. God has delivered him before. God has heard him before. He trusts that God will do it again.

Turned My Glory Into Shame (Psalm 4:2):

The psalmist laments the words of his enemies. They have turned his glory into shame. They have spoken lies. They have loved vanity. They have sought after falsehood. They have attacked his reputation. They have mocked his faith. They have doubted his God. But the psalmist does not answer them. He appeals to God.

Set Apart for Himself (Psalm 4:3):

The psalmist declares a truth. “The LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself.” God distinguishes His people. He sets them apart. He chooses them. He claims them. He protects them. He hears them. The godly are not ordinary. They are special. They are His. They are His possession. They are His treasure. They are His delight.

Stand in Awe and Sin Not (Psalm 4:4):

The psalmist warns against sin. “Stand in awe, and sin not.” Fear God. Respect God. Reverence God. Do not sin. Do not rebel. Do not speak against God. Do not doubt God. Do not turn away from God. And in the stillness of the night, commune with your own heart. Examine yourself. Reflect on your life. Consider your ways. Be still. Let the silence speak. Let the stillness reveal. Selah.

Offer the Sacrifices of Righteousness (Psalm 4:5):

True worship is not just words. It is righteousness. True worship is not just songs. It is sacrifice. True worship is not just emotion. It is obedience. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness. Live righteously. Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly. And put your trust in the Lord. Not in your sacrifices. Not in your righteousness. In the Lord.

Lift Up the Light of Thy Countenance (Psalm 4:6):

Many people ask, “Who will shew us any good?” They are looking for good. They are looking for blessing. They are looking for provision. They are looking for favour. They are looking for hope. The psalmist prays, “LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.” God’s countenance is His favour. His face is His presence. His light is His blessing. The light of His countenance is the greatest good. It is better than corn and wine. It is better than abundance. It is better than prosperity. It is better than comfort. It is the presence of God.

Gladness in My Heart (Psalm 4:7):

The psalmist testifies. “Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.” The gladness of the world is temporary. It is based on circumstances. It is based on harvest. It is based on prosperity. But the gladness of God is deeper. It is in the heart. It is not dependent on the harvest. It is not dependent on circumstances. It is the joy of the Lord. It is the gladness of His presence.

Peace and Safety (Psalm 4:8):

The psalmist ends with confidence. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” He is not afraid. He is not anxious. He is not worried. He lies down in peace. He sleeps without fear. He rests in God. He trusts in God. He knows that only God makes him dwell in safety. Not armies. Not walls. Not wealth. Not power. God alone. He is safe. He is secure. He is at peace.

Be Still and Know (Psalm 46:10):

This is one of the most famous verses in Scripture. “Be still, and know that I am God.” Be still. Stop striving. Stop struggling. Stop fighting. Stop worrying. Stop trying to fix everything. Be still. Let go. Rest. Trust. Know that God is God. He is in control. He is sovereign. He is powerful. He is good. He is faithful. He is able. He will be exalted among the nations. He will be exalted in the earth. Not just in Israel. Not just in the church. In all the earth. Every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess. He will be exalted.

Are you trusting in the Lord, or are you trusting in your own efforts? Are you lying down in peace, or are you restless with worry? Are you being still and knowing that He is God?
