BASIC SCRIPTURES: 2 SAMUEL 12:1-14; PSALM 3: 3

BASIC SCRIPTURE: 2 SAMUEL 12:1-14 (KJV)

1. And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

2. The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:

3. But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

4. And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

5. And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:

6. And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

7. And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

8. And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

9. Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

10. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

11. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

12. For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

13. And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

14. Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, send Nathan to me when I have sinned. Let me not be blind to my own faults, but let me see my sin and repent.

2. Lord, I confess every sin I have committed in secret. Let me not hide from You but bring my sin into the light.

3. Father, I repent of every time I have despised Your commandment and done evil in Your sight.

4. Lord, I receive Your forgiveness as David received it. Put away my sin and let me not die in my iniquity.

5. Father, I thank You that You are a shield for me. You protect me from my enemies and defend me from all harm.

6. Lord, I thank You that You are my glory. You give me honour and lift me up when I am humbled.

7. Father, I thank You that You are the lifter up of my head. You restore my hope and give me confidence.

8. Lord, let me not give occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme. Let my life be a testimony of Your grace and mercy.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that the Lord sends Nathan to me when I have sinned. I am not blind to my faults, and I repent of my sins.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse (2 Samuel): 2 Samuel 12:13 — “And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.”

The Parable of the Ewe Lamb (2 Samuel 12:1-4):

Nathan told David a story. A rich man had many flocks and herds. A poor man had one little ewe lamb. He loved it. He nourished it. It grew up with him. It ate his food. It drank his cup. It lay in his bosom. It was like a daughter to him. A traveller came to the rich man. The rich man did not take from his own flock. He took the poor man’s lamb. He killed it. He served it to his guest. It was a clear picture of injustice. It was a clear picture of cruelty. It was a clear picture of sin.

David’s Anger (Verses 5-6):

David was angry. He was outraged. He was incensed. He said, “As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die.” He judged the rich man harshly. He condemned him. He pronounced sentence. He said he should restore the lamb fourfold. He was just. He was righteous. He was fair. But he was blind. He could see the sin in the rich man. He could not see the sin in himself.

Thou Art the Man (Verse 7):

Nathan said, “Thou art the man.” David was the rich man. David had taken Uriah’s wife. David had killed Uriah. David had committed adultery. David had committed murder. David had done worse than the rich man in the parable. He had taken another man’s wife. He had taken another man’s life. He had taken everything the poor man had. He was the rich man. He was the sinner. He was the one condemned.

I Have Sinned Against the LORD (Verse 13):

David did not argue. He did not make excuses. He did not blame Bathsheba. He did not blame Uriah. He did not blame the circumstances. He said, “I have sinned against the LORD.” He confessed. He repented. He acknowledged his guilt. He admitted his sin. He accepted the judgment. He humbled himself. And Nathan said, “The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.” Forgiveness was immediate. Forgiveness was complete. Forgiveness was gracious. God did not hold his sin against him. He put it away.

The Consequences (Verses 10-14):

Forgiveness did not remove all consequences. The sword would never depart from David’s house. Evil would rise from his own household. His wives would be taken. His child would die. The consequences were real. They were painful. They were lasting. Sin has consequences. Even forgiven sin has consequences. It was not punishment. It was consequence. It was not wrath. It was discipline. It was not rejection. It was correction.

Psalm 3:3:

This psalm was written when David fled from his son Absalom. David was running from his own household. He had enemies on every side. Many were saying, “There is no help for him in God.” But David declared, “But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.” David knew God was his shield. He knew God was his glory. He knew God would lift up his head. He was confident. He was hopeful. He was trusting. He knew God would not abandon him. He knew God would protect him. He knew God would restore him.

Question for the Day:

Are you blind to your own sin? Are you quick to judge others and slow to judge yourself? Have you confessed your sin to the Lord? Have you received His forgiveness? Do you know that the Lord is your shield, your glory, and the lifter up of your head?
