BASIC SCRIPTURE: ACTS 20: 17 – 28

BASIC SCRIPTURE: ACTS 20:17-28 (KJV)

17. And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.

18. And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,

19. Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:

20. And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,

21. Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

22. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:

23. Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.

24. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

25. And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

26. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.

27. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

28. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, let me serve You with all humility of mind, with tears, and with steadfastness in the face of temptations.

2. Lord, help me to keep back nothing that is profitable to Your people. Let me preach the whole counsel of God.

3. Father, let me testify both to Jews and Greeks — repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

4. Lord, when bonds and afflictions await me, let none of these things move me. Let me not count my life dear unto myself.

5. Father, let me finish my course with joy and the ministry I have received from You.

6. Lord, let me testify the gospel of the grace of God with boldness and faithfulness.

7. Father, let me be pure from the blood of all men. Let me not fail to declare all Your counsel.

8. Lord, let me take heed to myself and to all the flock over which the Holy Ghost has made me an overseer.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that I serve the Lord with all humility of mind, with tears, and with steadfastness in the face of temptations.

2. I keep back nothing that is profitable to God’s people. I preach the whole counsel of God.

3. I testify both to Jews and Greeks — repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Acts 20:24 — “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”

The Calling of the Elders (Verses 17-18):

Paul sent for the elders of the church in Ephesus. He met them at Miletus. He gave them his final charge. He knew he would not see them again. He wanted to leave them with a legacy. He wanted to leave them with a model. He wanted to leave them with a warning. He wanted to leave them with a charge.

Paul’s Manner of Life (Verses 18-21):

Paul reminded them of how he had lived among them. He served the Lord with all humility. He served with tears. He served in the face of temptations. He served despite the plots of the Jews. He kept back nothing that was profitable. He taught publicly and from house to house. He testified to Jews and Greeks. He preached repentance and faith. He was a model of faithful ministry.

Bound in the Spirit (Verse 22):

Paul was going to Jerusalem. He was bound in the Spirit. He was compelled. He was constrained. He was driven. He did not know what would happen. He only knew that the Holy Spirit had warned him in every city. Bonds and afflictions awaited him. But he did not turn back. He did not avoid suffering. He did not take the easy path.

None of These Things Move Me (Verse 24):

Paul was unmoved. He was not shaken. He was not intimidated. He was not afraid. He did not count his life dear to himself. He was willing to die. He was willing to suffer. He was willing to be imprisoned. He was willing to be martyred. His goal was not comfort. His goal was not safety. His goal was not survival. His goal was to finish his course with joy. His goal was to complete the ministry he received from the Lord Jesus. His goal was to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

I Am Pure from the Blood of All Men (Verse 26):

Paul was clear. He was pure from the blood of all men. He had not shunned to declare the whole counsel of God. He had not held back. He had not hidden. He had not avoided difficult truths. He had not preached only what was popular. He had preached everything. He had declared all. He was innocent of their blood.

The Whole Counsel of God (Verse 27):

Paul had declared the whole counsel of God. Not just the parts people liked. Not just the parts that were easy. Not just the parts that were convenient. He had declared the whole. He had not shunned to declare it. He had not feared to declare it. He had not avoided declaring it. He had preached all of it.

Take Heed to Yourselves (Verse 28):

Paul charged the elders. “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock.” They were to watch themselves. They were to guard their own hearts. They were to guard their own doctrine. They were to guard their own conduct. They were to guard their own families. They were to guard their own lives. And they were to guard the flock. They were to feed the church of God. They were to shepherd the sheep. They were to protect them from wolves. They were to lead them in truth. They were to care for them in love. The church was purchased with Christ’s own blood. It is precious. It is valuable. It is eternal. It is to be guarded.

Question for the Day:

Are you serving the Lord with humility and tears? Are you declaring the whole counsel of God? Are you willing to finish your course with joy, even if it means suffering? Are you taking heed to yourself and to the flock?
