BASIC SCRIPTURE: COLOSSIANS 3:1-10

BASIC SCRIPTURE: COLOSSIANS 3:1-10 (KJV)

1. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6. For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

7. In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

8. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

9. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

10. And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, I thank You that I am risen with Christ. Let me seek those things which are above, where Christ sits at Your right hand.

2. Lord, set my affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Let my heart be fixed on eternal things.

3. Father, I thank You that my life is hid with Christ in God. Let me find my security and identity in Him.

4. Lord, help me to mortify my earthly members — every sin that clings so closely. Let me put to death fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness.

5. Father, I repent of every sin that brings Your wrath. Let me not be numbered among the children of disobedience.

Key Verse: Colossians 3:1 — “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”

Seek Those Things Which Are Above (Verse 1):

Paul begins with a conditional statement: “If ye then be risen with Christ.” It is not a doubt. It is a fact. You have been raised with Christ. You have died and been raised with Him. And because you have been raised with Him, you are to seek the things that are above. Seek is an active verb. It means to strive after, to pursue, to desire. You are to pursue heavenly things. You are to pursue the things of God. You are to pursue the things of the Spirit. You are to pursue the things of eternity. Your focus should be on where Christ is. He is seated at the right hand of God. That is your destination. That is your focus. That is your pursuit.

Set Your Affection on Things Above (Verse 2):

This is stronger than just seeking. Affection means to set your mind on, to have your heart set on. It is not just intellectual. It is emotional. It is volitional. It is the direction of your desires. You are to set your heart on the things above. Not just think about them. Set your affection on them. Love them. Desire them. Treasure them. Your heart should be captivated by heaven. Your heart should be captivated by Christ. Your heart should be captivated by eternal things. Not by the things on the earth.

Dead and Hid With Christ (Verse 3):

You have died. Your old life is dead. Your old identity is dead. Your old desires are dead. Your old patterns are dead. And your new life is hidden with Christ in God. It is not visible. It is not obvious. It is hidden. It is secure. It is safe. It is in Christ. It is in God. It cannot be touched. It cannot be stolen. It cannot be destroyed.

When Christ Appears (Verse 4):

Christ is your life. He is not just your example. He is not just your teacher. He is your life. He is the source of your life. He is the substance of your life. He is the meaning of your life. He is the purpose of your life. He is the hope of your life. And when He appears, you will appear with Him in glory. Not in shame. Not in defeat. In glory. His glory. Your glory. Shared glory. Revealed glory.

Mortify Your Earthly Members (Verse 5):

Mortify means to put to death. It is a violent word. It is a decisive word. It is a continual word. You are to put to death the sinful desires of your flesh. The list includes: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness. These are sins of the flesh. They are sins of the heart. They are sins of desire. They are sins of wanting what is wrong. They are sins of taking what does not belong to you. They are sins of lust. They are sins of greed. They are sins of idolatry. They must be put to death. They must be killed. They must not be fed. They must not be entertained. They must not be tolerated. They must be mortified.

The Wrath of God (Verse 6):

For these things, the wrath of God comes. God’s wrath is real. It is not a metaphor. It is not a myth. It is a reality. It is a judgment. It is a consequence. It is a holy response to sin. Those who live in these sins are children of disobedience. They are not children of God. They are children of wrath. They are under judgment. They are without excuse.

Put Off and Put On (Verses 8-10):

Paul contrasts the old life and the new life. You were once walking in these sins. But now, you are to put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, and filthy communication. You are to put off lying. You are to put off the old man with his deeds. And you are to put on the new man. The old man is dead. The new man is alive. The old man was corrupted by deceitful lusts. The new man is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him. You are being transformed. You are being renewed. You are being conformed to the image of Christ.

Question for the Day:

Are you seeking things above or things on the earth? Are you setting your affection on eternal things? Are you mortifying the deeds of the flesh? And have you put off the old man and put on the new man?
