PART ONE: SCRIPTURE READING
James 1:19-27 (KJV)
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

PART TWO: REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURE
James, the brother of our Lord, writes with practical wisdom that cuts to the heart of authentic Christian living. This passage is a manual for genuine faith, addressing how we hear, speak, act, and live.
The Discipline of Communication (verses 19-20)
“Swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
This threefold instruction is foundational for healthy relationships and spiritual growth:
- Swift to hear – Listening should be our first response. We hear God through His Word, we hear others through empathy, we hear counsel through humility. Being swift to hear requires intentionality and patience.

Slow to speak – Words have power. Once spoken, they cannot be retrieved. Being slow to speak gives time for reflection, prevents careless words, and allows the Spirit to guide our speech.

Slow to wrath – Anger is a destructive force. Human anger does not produce God’s righteousness. Even when anger seems justified, it must be controlled and submitted to the Spirit.
“The wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” This is a sobering truth. Our anger, no matter how righteous we think it is, does not accomplish God’s purposes. It defiles, divides, and destroys.
The Reception of the Word (verse 21)
“Lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”
Receiving God’s Word requires preparation:
- Lay apart filthiness – Sin must be confessed and forsaken. The soil of the heart must be cleared of weeds.
- Lay apart superfluity of naughtiness – “Superfluity” suggests abundance, overflowing wickedness. This must be removed.
- Receive with meekness – Humility, not pride, is the posture for receiving. We come as learners, not know-it-alls.
- The engrafted word – The Word must be implanted, rooted, integrated into our being. It is not external information but internal transformation.
- Able to save your souls – The Word has saving power. It rescues, delivers, and transforms.
The Response to the Word (verses 22-25)
“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
This is the heart of James’s message. Hearing without doing is self-deception. It creates an illusion of spirituality while lacking substance.
The Illustration of the Mirror (verses 23-24)
A man looks in a mirror, sees his face, then walks away and forgets what he looks like. The mirror represents the Word of God. It shows us who we truly are—our flaws, our needs, our identity in Christ. But if we only look and do not act on what we see, we forget and remain unchanged.
The Promise to Doers (verse 25)
“Whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
- The perfect law of liberty – God’s Word is not bondage but freedom. It liberates us from sin, deception, and futility.
- Looketh… and continueth – Ongoing attention, not casual glance.
- Not a forgetful hearer – Remembers and applies.
- A doer of the work – Faith in action.
- Blessed in his deed – Blessing follows obedience.
The Reality of Religion (verses 26-27)
“If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.”
True religion is tested by the tongue. Words reveal the heart. An unbridled tongue exposes empty religion.
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
James defines authentic faith by two marks:
- Compassionate action – Caring for the most vulnerable (fatherless and widows). True faith reaches out to those who cannot repay.
- Personal purity – Keeping oneself unspotted from the world. True faith separates from worldly corruption.
These two marks balance each other: we are not so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good, nor so earthly focused that we lose our heavenly distinctiveness.
PART THREE: PRAYER POINTS
Prayers for Hearing God
- Father, give me a heart that is swift to hear Your voice through Your Word, through Your Spirit, and through godly counsel, in Jesus’ name.
- Lord, remove every distraction that hinders my hearing. Help me to be attentive and receptive to what You are saying, in Jesus’ name.
- Father, let me hear not just with my ears but with my heart, receiving Your Word deep into my spirit, in Jesus’ name.
Prayers for Speaking Wisely
- Lord, make me slow to speak. Help me to think before I speak and to weigh my words carefully, in Jesus’ name.
- Father, put a guard over my mouth. Let no corrupt word proceed from my lips, but only what is good for edification, in Jesus’ name.
- Lord, help me to bridle my tongue. Let my words bring life, not death; healing, not harm; peace, not strife, in Jesus’ name.
Prayers for Controlling Anger
- Father, make me slow to wrath. Help me to control my temper and respond with grace rather than anger, in Jesus’ name.
- Lord, let Your righteousness be worked in me, not my own angry reactions. Purify my emotions and responses, in Jesus’ name.
- Father, heal every wound that makes me prone to anger. Let Your peace rule in my heart, in Jesus’ name.
Prayers for Receiving the Word
- Father, help me to lay apart all filthiness and wickedness from my life. Cleanse me from every sin that hinders Your Word, in Jesus’ name.
- Lord, I receive with meekness the engrafted word. Let it take root in my heart and transform my life, in Jesus’ name.
- Father, let Your Word save my soul—deliver me from deception, guide me into truth, and shape me into Your likeness, in Jesus’ name.
Prayers for Being Doers
- Lord, make me a doer of the Word, not a hearer only. Deliver me from the deception of hearing without obeying, in Jesus’ name.
- Father, when I look into the mirror of Your Word, let me not forget what I see. Help me to act on what You show me, in Jesus’ name.
- Lord, let me look intently into the perfect law of liberty and continue in it. Let obedience be my lifestyle, in Jesus’ name.
- Father, bless me in my deeds as I obey Your Word. Let my actions produce fruit for Your glory, in Jesus’ name.
Prayers for Pure Religion
- Father, let my religion not be vain. Let my faith be genuine, demonstrated by love and purity, in Jesus’ name.
- Lord, give me a heart to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction. Let me be Your hands and feet to the vulnerable, in Jesus’ name.
- Father, help me to keep myself unspotted from the world. Let me live in the world but not be of it, in Jesus’ name.

Lord, help me to be swift to hear. Open my ears to Your voice. Let me not miss what You are saying through Your Word, through Your Spirit, or through others.
Help me to be slow to speak. Guard my mouth. Let my words be seasoned with grace and truth. Let me not speak in haste or anger.
Help me to be slow to wrath. Let Your peace rule in my heart. Purify my emotions and help me to respond as Jesus would.
