JOB 21:17–26 (KJV)

17 How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

18 They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.

19 God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

20 His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

21 For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?

22 Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

23 One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

24 His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

25 And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

26 They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

DEVOTIONAL REFLECTION

In this passage, Job responds to his friends who argued that the wicked always suffer immediately. Job challenges their simplistic theology by observing that often the wicked seem to prosper—their candle is not quickly put out, and they die in full strength and ease (verses 23–24). Yet Job also acknowledges that God sees their destruction and that ultimately, both the prosperous wicked and the bitter sufferer end in the same place: the dust, covered by worms (verse 26). The key lesson is found in verse 22: “Shall any teach God knowledge?” God’s ways are higher than ours. He judges righteously, even when we cannot see immediate justice. This passage calls us to trust God’s timing, resist envy of the wicked, and focus on eternal rather than temporal rewards.

PRAYER POINTS

(Based on Job 21:17–26)

1. Father, I thank You because You are the righteous Judge. You see all things, and no evil escapes Your notice. I trust Your perfect justice. (Job 21:22)

2. Lord, deliver me from the sin of envying the wicked who seem to prosper. Help me to keep my eyes on You and not on their temporary success.

3. Father, let every candle of the wicked that is lit against my life, family, and destiny be suddenly put out by Your fire. (Job 21:17)

4. Lord, let the wicked become as stubble before the wind and as chaff that the storm carries away. Let every conspiracy against me be scattered. (Job 21:18)

5. Father, I pray that no inherited iniquity or generational curse from my ancestors shall have dominion over me. I am redeemed by the blood of Jesus. (Job 21:19)

6. Lord, give me the grace to live in such a way that my house after me will be blessed, not judged. Let my children serve You. (Job 21:21)

7. Father, I submit my understanding to You. I refuse to teach God knowledge or question His ways. I trust that Your judgments are perfect, even when I don’t understand. (Job 21:22)

8. Lord, I pray that I will not die in the bitterness of my soul. Let me die in peace, full of faith, and with joy in my heart, not in regret or rebellion. (Job 21:23, 25)

9. Father, remind me daily that the grave is no respecter of persons. Rich or poor, wicked or righteous in appearance—all lie in the dust. Therefore, let me live for eternity, not for earthly applause. (Job 21:26)

10. Lord, search my heart. Remove any hidden pride that makes me think I know better than You. I surrender my understanding of justice and timing to Your wisdom.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that God is the righteous Judge. No evil done against me will go unpunished. Vengeance belongs to the Lord.

2. I declare that I will not envy the prosperity of the wicked. Their candle can be put out in a moment, but my light comes from the Lord and shall not be extinguished.

3. I declare that every wicked plot against my life is as stubble before the wind. The storm of God shall carry them away.

4. I declare that I am not under generational judgment. The blood of Jesus has broken every curse, and I am a new creation in Christ.

5. I declare that I refuse to teach God knowledge. His ways are higher than my ways, and His thoughts than my thoughts. I trust Him completely.

6. I declare that I shall not die in bitterness of soul. My latter end shall be greater than my beginning, and I will finish my race with joy.

7. I declare that whether I live or die, I am the Lord’s. The dust is not my end—eternal life in Christ Jesus is my destiny.

8. I declare that I live in full strength and spiritual ease because my trust is in the Lord, not in the temporary riches of this world.

9. I declare that the wrath of the Almighty shall not fall upon me because I am covered by the blood of Jesus. I am justified by faith.

10. I declare that from today, I stop questioning God’s timing. I rest in His sovereignty, knowing that He makes all things beautiful in His time.
