Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 (KJV)

1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

PART TWO: REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURE

Ecclesiastes 3 is one of the most poetic and profound passages in all of Scripture. It addresses the fundamental rhythms of life—the seasons, times, and purposes that God has ordained for human existence.

The Sovereignty of Divine Timing (verses 1-8)

The passage opens with a foundational truth: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” This establishes that life is not random or chaotic. God has ordained times and seasons for every experience.

The fourteen pairs of opposites cover the full spectrum of human experience:

Birth and Death – The bookends of life. God determines both.

Planting and Harvesting – The agricultural cycle reflects spiritual truths. There is a time to sow and a time to reap.

The Question of Profit (verse 9)

“What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?”

This rhetorical question challenges us to look beyond mere activity to eternal significance. If we labor without understanding God’s timing, our work may be in vain. But when we align with His seasons, our labor produces lasting fruit.

The Gift of Travail (verse 10)

“I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.”

Travail – hard work, struggle, effort – is not a curse but a gift from God. It exercises us, strengthens us, and develops our character. The difficulties we face are not meaningless; they are part of God’s design for our growth.

The Beauty of Divine Timing (verse 11)

“He hath made every thing beautiful in his time.”
