PART ONE: SCRIPTURE READING

Acts 20:16-38 (KJV)

16 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.

17 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.

18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,

19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:

20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,

21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:

23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.

24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.

27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.

34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.

35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

36 And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.

37 And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him,

38 Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.

PART TWO: REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURE

This passage contains Paul’s farewell address to the Ephesian elders—one of the most personal and moving speeches in all of Scripture. Speaking to men he would never see again, Paul opens his heart and reveals the principles that guided his ministry.

Paul’s Urgency and Priority (verse 16)

Paul was hastening to Jerusalem for Pentecost. He bypassed Ephesus to save time, demonstrating his commitment to God’s timing and priorities. He understood the significance of divine appointments.

The Character of Paul’s Ministry (verses 17-21)

“At all seasons” – His ministry was consistent, not sporadic.

“Serving the Lord with all humility of mind” – True service flows from humility, not pride.

“With many tears” – His ministry was marked by deep emotion and genuine compassion.

“With temptations” – trials and testings – He ministered through difficulty, not ease.

“I kept back nothing that was profitable” – He preached the full counsel of God, withholding nothing beneficial.

“Publickly, and from house to house” – He reached people everywhere—in crowds and in homes.

“Testifying repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” – His message was simple and consistent: turn from sin, trust in Christ.

The Compulsion of the Spirit (verses 22-23)

Paul went to Jerusalem “bound in the spirit.” The Holy Spirit constrained him, directing his steps even toward suffering. He didn’t know the details of what awaited, but he knew bonds and afflictions were ahead. Yet he went anyway.

The Resolute Declaration (verse 24)

This verse contains one of the most powerful statements of commitment in Scripture:

“But none of these things move me” – Threats, bonds, afflictions—none of them shook his resolve.

“Neither count I my life dear unto myself” – His life was not his most treasured possession.

“So that I might finish my course with joy” – His goal was not just to finish, but to finish with joy.

“And the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus” – He saw his ministry as a stewardship, not an achievement.

“To testify the gospel of the grace of God” – This was his life’s purpose.

The Clear Conscience (verses 25-27)

Paul knew he would not see these beloved brothers again. This awareness gave his words urgency. He could declare with confidence: “I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.”

The Charge to the Elders (verses 28-31)

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves” – Leaders must first guard their own souls.

“And to all the flock” – Then they must care for those entrusted to them.

“Overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood” – The church is precious; it cost God His Son.

“Grievous wolves shall enter in” – External threats will come.

“Of your own selves shall men arise” – Internal threats will also come.

“Therefore watch” – Vigilance is essential.

“I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears” – Faithful ministry includes warning.

The Commendation (verse 32)

“I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”

Paul entrusted them not to his own ability but to God and His Word—the only things that can truly build and secure inheritance.

The Example of Generosity (verses 33-35)

“I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.” – Paul was not motivated by money.

“These hands have ministered unto my necessities.” – He worked to support himself.

“Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – This saying of Jesus, not recorded in the Gospels, was preserved by Paul. It captures the heart of kingdom economics: blessing flows through giving.

The Emotional Farewell (verses 36-38)

They knelt, prayed, wept, embraced, and sorrowed most of all that they would see his face no more. This was not mere sentiment but deep spiritual affection.

PART THREE: KEY THEMES FOR PRAYER

1. Faithful Ministry

Paul’s example challenges us to serve with humility, tears, consistency, and completeness.

2. Spirit-Led Living

Being “bound in the spirit” means following God’s leading even when it leads to difficulty.

3. Finishing with Joy

The goal is not just to finish but to finish with joy, regardless of what we face.

4. Clear Conscience

Living so that we can say we have been faithful to our calling and have not shunned declaring truth.

5. Care for the Flock

Leaders must guard themselves and guard those entrusted to them.

6. Warning Against Threats

Both external wolves and internal deceivers threaten the church. Vigilance is required.

7. The Power of God’s Word

The Word of His grace builds us up and gives us inheritance.

8. The Blessing of Giving

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Generosity is a mark of kingdom living.

PART FOUR: PRAYER POINTS

Prayers for Faithful Ministry

1. Father, give me grace to serve You with all humility of mind, not seeking my own glory but Yours, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord, let my ministry be marked by tears—genuine compassion for souls and sorrow over sin, in Jesus’ name.

3. Father, help me to keep back nothing that is profitable to those I serve. Let me declare Your whole counsel, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for Spirit-Led Living

1. Lord, let me be bound in the Spirit, following Your leading even when I don’t know where it leads, in Jesus’ name.

2. Father, give me grace to trust You when the path includes bonds and afflictions, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for Finishing with Joy

1. Lord, let nothing move me from my course. Let no threat, no trial, no temptation shake my resolve, in Jesus’ name.

2. Father, help me not to count my life dear unto myself. Let me hold it loosely for Your sake, in Jesus’ name.

3. Lord, grant that I may finish my course with joy—not just finishing, but finishing well, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for a Clear Conscience

1. Father, let me live so that I can say I am pure from the blood of all men—faithful in warning and witness, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord, let me not shrink from declaring all Your counsel, even the difficult parts, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for Leaders and the Flock

1. Father, help me to take heed to myself first, guarding my own heart and life, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord, give me grace to care for the flock You have entrusted to me, feeding them with Your Word, in Jesus’ name.

3. Father, protect Your church from grievous wolves and from those within who would speak perverse things, in Jesus’ name.

4. Lord, give me vigilance to watch and warn with tears, as Paul did, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for the Word of Grace

1. Father, I commend myself and those I love to You and to the word of Your grace. Let it build us up and give us inheritance, in Jesus’ name.

1. Lord, deliver me from covetousness. Let me not love money or use ministry for gain, in Jesus’ name.

2. Father, teach me to labor with my hands to meet my needs and to support others, in Jesus’ name.

3. Lord, let me remember the words of Jesus: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Let generosity mark my life, in Jesus’ name.

Father, I thank You for the example of Your servant Paul. I thank You for his faithful ministry, his courageous commitment, his clear conscience, and his generous heart.

Lord, give me grace to serve with humility, to preach with boldness, to follow with trust, and to finish with joy.

Let me not shrink from declaring all Your counsel. Let me not fear the bonds and afflictions that may come. Let me not count my life dear unto myself.

Help me to take heed to myself and to those entrusted to my care. Protect Your church from wolves and deceivers. Give me vigilance to watch and warn.

I commend myself and those I love to You and to the word of Your grace. Let it build us up and give us inheritance.

Deliver me from covetousness. Let me labor with my hands and give with generosity. Let me remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
