BASIC SCRIPTURE: LUKE 12: 6 – 20

6. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

7. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

8. Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

9. But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

10. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

11. And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

12. For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

13. And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

14. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

15. And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

16. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17. And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

18. And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

20. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, I thank You that not one sparrow is forgotten before You. I know that I am of more value than many sparrows.

2. Lord, I thank You that the very hairs of my head are numbered. Let me not fear, for You care for me.

3. Father, let me confess You before men. Let me not deny You, but be bold in my testimony.

4. Lord, keep me from blaspheming the Holy Ghost. Let me be sensitive to Your Spirit and not resist Him.

5. Father, when I am brought before authorities, teach me what to say. Let the Holy Ghost give me the right words.

6. Lord, deliver me from covetousness. Let me not think that my life consists in the abundance of my possessions.

7. Father, help me to be rich toward You. Let me not store up treasures for myself and be poor toward God.

8. Lord, let me not be like the rich fool who thought he had many years, but his soul was required that night. Let me live with eternity in view.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Luke 12:15 — “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

The Value of the Soul (Verses 6-7):

Jesus speaks of sparrows. Five sparrows were sold for two farthings. They were cheap. They were common. They were not valuable in the eyes of the world. But not one of them is forgotten before God. If God cares for sparrows, how much more does He care for you? The very hairs of your head are numbered. He knows every detail of your life. He knows every concern. He knows every fear. He knows every need. You are of more value than many sparrows. So fear not.

Confessing Christ (Verses 8-9):

Jesus speaks of confession. Whoever confesses Him before men, He will confess before the angels of God. Whoever denies Him before men, He will deny before the angels of God. Confession is important. It is a test of loyalty. It is a test of faith. It is a test of courage. It is a test of love. Those who confess Jesus are identified with Him. Those who deny Jesus are disowned by Him.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Ghost (Verse 10):

Jesus makes a distinction. Speaking a word against the Son of man is forgivable. Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is not forgivable. This is a serious warning. The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts of sin. The Holy Spirit is the one who reveals Christ. The Holy Spirit is the one who works in the heart. To blaspheme the Holy Spirit is to reject His work. It is to attribute His work to the devil. It is to resist His conviction. It is to harden your heart against His testimony. It is to reject the only means of salvation. It is unforgivable because it refuses the only forgiveness available.

The Holy Spirit Will Teach You (Verses 11-12):

Jesus speaks of persecution. They will bring you before synagogues, magistrates, and powers. They will accuse you. They will question you. They will threaten you. Do not worry about what to say. Do not stress about how to answer. The Holy Spirit will teach you what to say. He will give you words. He will give you wisdom. He will give you boldness. He will give you a testimony. He will be with you.

The Parable of the Rich Fool (Verses 13-20):

A man asked Jesus to settle a dispute about inheritance. Jesus refused. He did not come to be a judge of earthly matters. He then warned against covetousness. He said, “A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Then he told a parable. A rich man had a plentiful harvest. He had no room to store his goods. He decided to pull down his barns and build bigger ones. He would store all his goods. He would say to his soul, “Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” But God said, “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” The man was rich in earthly things. He was poor toward God. He thought he had many years. He had only one night. He thought he was secure. He was lost. He thought he was wise. He was a fool.

Question for the Day:

Do you know that you are of more value than sparrows? Are you confessing Jesus before men? Are you listening to the Holy Spirit? And are you storing up treasures for yourself, or are you rich toward God?
