BASIC SCRIPTURE: HEBREWS 12: 1-8

BASIC SCRIPTURE: HEBREWS 12:1-8 (KJV)

  1. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

  2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  3. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

  4. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

  5. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

  6. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

  7. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

  8. But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Hebrews 12:2 — “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

The Cloud of Witnesses (Verse 1):

The writer of Hebrews refers to the great cloud of witnesses. These are the heroes of faith from the previous chapter. They have finished their race. They have run their course. They have kept the faith. They are now witnesses. They are spectators. They are cheering us on. They are encouraging us to run. They are reminding us that the race is winnable. The race is finishable. The race is worth it.

Lay Aside Every Weight (Verse 1):

We are to lay aside every weight. Weights are not sins. They are things that slow us down. They are things that hinder us. They are things that distract us. They are things that burden us. They are things that keep us from running freely. They may be good things. They may be legitimate things. They may be necessary things. But they are weights. And they must be laid aside. And we are to lay aside the sin that so easily besets us. Every sin has a besetting quality. It is the sin we are most prone to. The sin that trips us up most often. The sin that entraps us most easily. It must be laid aside. It must be cast off. It must be put away.

Run With Patience (Verse 1):

We are to run with patience. Patience is endurance. It is perseverance. It is steadfastness. It is the ability to keep going when it is hard. It is the ability to keep going when you are tired. It is the ability to keep going when you are discouraged. It is the ability to keep going when you are in pain. The race is not a sprint. It is a marathon. It requires patience. It requires endurance. It requires persistence.

Looking Unto Jesus (Verse 2):

This is the key to running the race. Looking unto Jesus. Not looking at the crowd. Not looking at the obstacles. Not looking at the opposition. Not looking at the circumstances. Looking unto Jesus. He is the author of our faith. He is the originator. He is the source. He is the beginner. He is the one who starts faith. He is the finisher of our faith. He is the completer. He is the perfecter. He is the one who brings faith to completion. He endured the cross. He despised the shame. He saw the joy set before Him. He looked beyond the pain. He looked beyond the shame. He looked beyond the suffering. He saw the joy. He saw the victory. He saw the glory. He saw the reward. And He is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. He has finished. He has overcome. He has conquered. He is victorious. And we are to look unto Him.

Consider Him (Verse 3):

We are to consider Jesus. We are to think about Him. We are to meditate on Him. We are to reflect on Him. He endured contradiction of sinners against Himself. He was opposed. He was rejected. He was mocked. He was insulted. He was persecuted. He was hated. And He endured it all. He did not give up. He did not quit. He did not turn back. He persevered. He endured. He finished. And we are to consider Him. So that we do not become weary and faint in our minds.

Chastening and Discipline (Verses 5-8):

The writer reminds them of the exhortation about chastening. “My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” Chastening is not punishment. It is discipline. It is training. It is correction. It is instruction. It is a sign of love. God chastens every son He receives. If you are not chastened, you are not a son. You are a bastard. You are illegitimate. Chastening is a sign of sonship. It is a sign of belonging. It is a sign of love. It is a sign of being God’s child. Do not despise it. Do not resist it. Do not reject it. Receive it. Learn from it. Grow through it. Endure it. It is for your good. It is for your growth. It is for your holiness.

Question for the Day:

Are you laying aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets you? Are you looking unto Jesus? Are you considering Him? Are you enduring chastening as a son? And are you running with patience the race set before you?
