BASIC SCRIPTURE: LUKE 2: 40-52

BASIC SCRIPTURE: LUKE 2:40-52 (KJV)

40. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

41. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

50. And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, let me grow and wax strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and let Your grace be upon me.

2. Lord, let me be about my Father’s business. Let my life be consumed with doing Your will.

3. Father, let me be found in the temple — in Your presence, hearing Your Word, and seeking Your understanding.

4. Lord, give me a hunger for Your Word and a desire to know You more deeply.

5. Father, let me not be like Joseph and Mary who sought Jesus among kinsfolk and acquaintance. Let me seek You in the right place.

6. Lord, help me to submit to authority as Jesus submitted to His parents. Let me walk in humility and obedience.

7. Father, let me increase in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

8. Lord, let my life be a continual growth in grace and in the knowledge of You.

DECLARATIONS

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Luke 2:49 — “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

The Growth of Jesus (Verse 40):

Luke gives a summary of Jesus’ early years. He grew. He waxed strong in spirit. He was filled with wisdom. The grace of God was upon Him. He was not just a child. He was a child with a divine destiny. He was a child with a divine nature. He was a child with a divine mission. He grew physically. He grew spiritually. He grew intellectually. He grew relationally. He grew in every way. He was fully human and fully divine.

The Passover Visit (Verses 41-42):

Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem every year for the Passover. It was a custom. It was a tradition. It was an act of obedience. It was an act of worship. When Jesus was twelve, He went with them. Twelve was the age of transition. He was becoming a man. He was assuming responsibility. He was beginning His journey toward His mission.

The Missing Jesus (Verses 43-45):

The feast was over. They started to return home. They assumed Jesus was in the company. They did not check. They did not verify. They did not confirm. They assumed. They went a day’s journey before they realized He was missing. They sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. They looked for Him in the wrong place. They looked for Him among familiar people. They looked for Him in familiar settings. They did not find Him. They turned back to Jerusalem. They went back to the place where He should have been.

The Finding (Verses 46-47):

After three days, they found Him. He was in the temple. He was sitting in the midst of the doctors. He was hearing them. He was asking them questions. He was not just learning. He was teaching. He was not just receiving. He was giving. All who heard Him were astonished. They were amazed at His understanding and His answers. He was only twelve. But He was already displaying divine wisdom.

The Rebuke (Verse 48):

Mary asked, “Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.” She was concerned. She was anxious. She was worried. She was hurt. She had been searching for Him with sorrow. She did not understand what He was doing. She did not understand His mission.

My Father’s Business (Verse 49):

Jesus answered, “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” He was not being disrespectful. He was being clear. He had a Father. His Father was not Joseph. His Father was God. His Father had a business. His Father had a mission. His Father had a purpose. Jesus had to be about His Father’s business. He had to be in His Father’s house. He had to be doing His Father’s will. He had to be fulfilling His Father’s plan.

The Submission (Verse 51):

Jesus went down with them. He came to Nazareth. He was subject to them. He submitted to His earthly parents. He obeyed them. He respected them. He honoured them. He was not rebellious. He was not defiant. He was not disobedient. He submitted. He was a son. He was a child. He lived in obedience. He lived in humility. He lived in submission. Mary kept all these sayings in her heart. She treasured them. She pondered them. She remembered them.

The Increase (Verse 52):

Jesus increased in wisdom and stature. He grew mentally. He grew physically. He grew in favour with God and man. He was pleasing to God. He was pleasing to people. He was approved by heaven. He was accepted by earth. He was growing. He was developing. He was maturing. He was becoming the man God had called Him to be. He was preparing for His mission. He was preparing for His ministry. He was preparing for His sacrifice.

Question for the Day:

Are you about your Father’s business? Are you seeking Jesus in the right place? Are you growing in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man? And are you submitting to authority and walking in obedience?
