Proper Order in Worship

KEY VERSE
“But when the people of the land shall come before the LORD in the solemn feasts, he that entereth in by the way of the north gate to worship shall go out by the way of the south gate; and he that entereth by the way of the south gate shall go forth by the way of the north gate: he shall not return by the way of the gate whereby he came in, but shall go forth over against it” (Ezekiel 46:9).
Bible Reading:
Ezekiel 46:9-15 (KJV)
9 But when the people of the land shall come before the LORD in the solemn feasts, he that entereth in by the way of the north gate to worship shall go out by the way of the south gate; and he that entereth by the way of the south gate shall go forth by the way of the north gate: he shall not return by the way of the gate whereby he came in, but shall go forth over against it.
10 And the prince in the midst of them, when they go in, shall go in; and when they go forth, shall go forth.
11 And in the feasts and in the solemnities the meat offering shall be an ephah to a bullock, and an ephah to a ram, and to the lambs as he is able to give, and an hin of oil to an ephah.
12 Now when the prince shall prepare a voluntary burnt offering or peace offerings voluntarily unto the LORD, one shall then open him the gate that looketh toward the east, and he shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, as he did on the sabbath day: then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate.
13 Thou shalt daily prepare a burnt offering unto the LORD of a lamb of the first year without blemish: thou shalt prepare it every morning.
14 And thou shalt prepare a meat offering for it every morning, the sixth part of an ephah, and the third part of an hin of oil, to temper with the fine flour; a meat offering continually by a perpetual ordinance unto the LORD.
15 Thus shall they prepare the lamb, and the meat offering, and the oil, every morning for a continual burnt offering.
MESSAGE
Deeply immersed in meditation during a church service, Italian poet Dante Alighieri failed to kneel at the appropriate moment. His enemies hurried to the bishop and demanded that Dante be punished for his sacrilege. Dante defended himself by saying, “If those who accuse me had had their eyes and minds on God, as I had, they too would have failed to notice events around them, and they most certainly would not have noticed what I was doing.”
Failing to kneel when required during worship in some assemblies is an infringement taken seriously. The passage for today’s devotion also contained some liturgical order that the congregants at Israel’s temple were required to observe.
Several striking instructions stand out in the order and reverence in the temple worship. No one was to leave the temple through the same entrance they came in during the solemn feasts. The prince was to be in the midst of the worshippers as they came in and exit the temple. Worshippers were also commanded to adhere strictly to the offering requirements every morning and evening, and during the Sabbath days.
Approaching God in worship should not be done irreverently and frivolously. Church should not be used as a venue for social and economic activities. Reverence for God should require that we listen attentively to His words, meditate and apply the lessons to our lives. There is punishment and severe consequences should we turn the sanctuary of God into a centre for immoral practices. Neither should we wear strange apparels into His temple.
The prevailing wild and indecorous so-called praise worship in many assemblies today is completely dysfunctional and injurious to the Holy Spirit who is gentle, meek and mild. Even so, a prolonged worship session at the expense of breaking the bread of life can drain the soul of the vital elixir for life and godliness. True worship and praise of God must be conducted in absolute holiness, decency, and orderliness presented as a sweet-smelling savour for it to command blessings from on High.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Never leave the Lord’s presence the same way you came

COMMENTARY
1. God Requires Order in Worship – The instructions in Ezekiel regarding entering and exiting the temple show that God cares about how we approach Him. Worship is not casual or chaotic; it is to be conducted with order and reverence. God is holy, and those who worship Him must do so in spirit and truth.
2. The Symbolism of Different Gates – Worshippers were not to return through the same gate they entered. This may symbolize that true worship should transform us—we should not leave the same way we came. We should exit different from how we entered, having encountered the living God.
3. Reverence in the House of God – The devotional warns against irreverent and frivolous behavior in church. The sanctuary is not a place for social or economic activities. We must listen attentively to God’s Word, meditate on it, and apply it to our lives. Strange apparels and immoral practices have no place in His temple.
4. The Danger of Disorderly Worship – The devotional criticizes the “wild and indecorous” praise worship in many assemblies today. True worship must be conducted in holiness, decency, and orderliness. The Holy Spirit is gentle and meek, and our worship should reflect His character.
5. The DCLM Ministry’s Emphasis on Orderly Worship – The Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes reverent and orderly worship. Pastor Kumuyi teaches that worship must be conducted according to biblical principles, not according to worldly trends. The Daily Manna devotional calls readers to approach God with reverence and order.

Prayer Reflection
Lord, teach me to approach You with reverence and order. Help me to worship You in spirit and truth. Keep me from irreverence and frivolity in Your house. May I never leave Your presence the same way I came. Transform me as I worship You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
