BASIC SCRIPTURES: GENESIS 48: 8 – 20; MARK 4: 38

BASIC SCRIPTURE: MONDAY, 19TH OCTOBER 2026 — GENESIS 48:8-20 (KJV)

  1. And Israel beheld Joseph’s sons, and said, Who are these?

  2. And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.

  3. Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.

  4. And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.

  5. And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

  6. And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him.

  7. And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.

  8. And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,

  9. The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

  10. And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.

  11. And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.

  12. And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

  13. And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — MONDAY, 19TH OCTOBER 2026

Key Verse (Genesis): Genesis 48:19 — “And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he.”

Key Verse (Mark): Mark 4:38 — “And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?”

Israel Blesses Joseph’s Sons (Genesis 48:8-10):

Jacob, now called Israel, was old. His eyes were dim. He could not see. Joseph brought his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, to his father. He wanted them to be blessed. He wanted them to receive the blessing of the patriarch. Israel beheld them and asked, “Who are these?” Joseph answered, “They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place.” And Israel said, “Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.” The blessing of the patriarch was not a small thing. It was a sacred act. It was a prophetic declaration. It was a spiritual impartation. It was a transfer of inheritance. It was a conveyance of destiny.

Israel’s Testimony (Genesis 48:11):

Israel said to Joseph, “I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.” Israel had given up hope. He thought Joseph was dead. He thought he would never see his son again. He had mourned for years. He had grieved for decades. But God had restored him. God had given him more than he expected. God had shown him not only Joseph but also Joseph’s sons. The mercy of God exceeds our expectations. The goodness of God surpasses our hopes. The grace of God overflows our imagination.

The Crossing of Hands (Genesis 48:13-14):

Joseph took Ephraim in his right hand and Manasseh in his left hand. He positioned them before Israel. He placed Manasseh, the firstborn, opposite Israel’s right hand, and Ephraim, the younger, opposite Israel’s left hand. He expected Israel to bless Manasseh with his right hand. He expected the firstborn to receive the greater blessing. But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it upon Ephraim’s head. He laid his left hand upon Manasseh’s head. He crossed his hands. He guided his hands wittingly. He knew what he was doing. He was not confused. He was not mistaken. He was intentional. He was deliberate. He was purposeful.

Joseph’s Displeasure (Genesis 48:17-18):

Joseph saw what his father was doing. And it displeased him. He did not understand. He did not agree. He did not approve. He tried to correct his father. He held up his father’s hand. He tried to remove it from Ephraim’s head and put it on Manasseh’s head. He said, “Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.” Joseph was thinking naturally. He was thinking culturally. He was thinking according to tradition. He was thinking according to custom. He was thinking according to the expected order. The firstborn should receive the greater blessing. That was the norm. That was the pattern. That was the tradition.

God’s Sovereign Choice (Genesis 48:19-20):

Israel refused. He said, “I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.” Israel knew what he was doing. He was not making a mistake. He was following the leading of the Spirit. He was following the sovereign choice of God. God had chosen the younger over the older. God had chosen Ephraim over Manasseh. God had chosen the second over the first. This was not the first time. God chose Isaac over Ishmael. God chose Jacob over Esau. God chose Joseph over his brothers. God chose David over his brothers. God does not follow human tradition. God does not follow human custom. God does not follow human expectation. God has His own plans. God has His own purposes. God has His own choices. And His choices are not always our choices. His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts.

Jesus Asleep in the Storm (Mark 4:38):

The disciples were in a boat. A great storm arose. The waves beat into the ship. The boat was filling with water. They were in danger. They were afraid. They were panicking. And Jesus was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow. He was sleeping. He was resting. He was calm. He was peaceful. He was not worried. He was not afraid. He was not anxious. And the disciples woke Him. They said, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” They thought He did not care. They thought He was indifferent. They thought He was unaware. They thought He was negligent. They thought He was irresponsible. They accused Him. They questioned Him. They doubted Him.

The Heart of the Matter:

Both passages reveal something about how we see God. Joseph thought he knew better than his father Israel. The disciples thought they knew better than Jesus. Joseph tried to correct the man of God. The disciples tried to accuse the Son of God. Joseph did not understand the sovereign choice of God. The disciples did not understand the sovereign control of God. Joseph wanted the blessing to follow tradition. The disciples wanted Jesus to follow their expectations. But God does not follow our traditions. And Jesus does not follow our expectations. He is sovereign. He is in control. He is working. He is moving. He is blessing. And sometimes He does things differently from what we expect. Sometimes He chooses the younger over the older. Sometimes He sleeps when we think He should be awake. Sometimes He is silent when we think He should be speaking. But He is always right. He is always wise. He is always good. He is always loving. He is always in control. Trust Him. Trust His choices. Trust His timing. Trust His methods. Trust His ways. Because His ways are higher than your ways. And His thoughts are higher than your thoughts.

Question for the Day — Monday, 19th October 2026:

Are you trying to correct God? Are you trying to tell Him what to do? Are you accusing Him of not caring? Or are you trusting His sovereign choice and His sovereign control?
