BASIC SCRIPTURE: EXODUS 17:1-6

BASIC SCRIPTURE: EXODUS 17:1-6 (KJV)

1. And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

2. Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

3. And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

4. And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

5. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6. Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, when I am in the wilderness and there is no water, let me not murmur against You or Your servants. Give me a heart of trust.

2. Lord, forgive me for every time I have chided against You and tempted You with my unbelief. Let me not test Your patience.

3. Father, when the people murmur against me, let me cry out to You as Moses did. Let me not take their attacks personally.

4. Lord, I thank You that You always have a solution for my need. Even in the wilderness, You provide water from the rock.

5. Father, let me take the rod of Your authority and smite the rock of my situation. Let water flow from every dry place.

6. Lord, I ask that You stand before me upon the rock. Let Your presence be the source of my provision.

7. Father, let me do what You command in the sight of others, that they may see Your power and believe.

8. Lord, I receive Your provision today. My thirst shall be quenched. My need shall be met.

DECLARATIONS

1. I declare that I will not murmur against God in the wilderness. My trust is in Him who provides.

2. I repent of every word of complaint and unbelief. I will not tempt the Lord with my doubts.

3. When I am attacked, I cry out to God. He hears me and He answers.

4. God has a solution for every need. Even in the wilderness, water flows from the rock.

5. I take the rod of God’s authority and smite the rock. Provision flows from every dry place.

6. The Lord stands before me upon the rock. His presence is the source of all I need.

7. I do what God commands. My obedience is seen by others, and God is glorified.

8. My thirst is quenched. My need is met. God is my provider.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION

Key Verse: Exodus 17:6 — “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.”

The Wilderness Journey (Verse 1):

Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin and pitched in Rephidim. They were following the commandment of the Lord. They were in the place of obedience. But Rephidim had no water. They had followed God, and yet they found themselves in a dry place. Obedience does not always mean comfort. Following God does not always mean ease. The wilderness is often the place of testing.

The Murmuring (Verses 2-3):

The people chided with Moses. They said, “Give us water.” They were thirsty. Their thirst was real. But their response was wrong. They blamed Moses. They accused him of bringing them out of Egypt to kill them. They questioned God’s goodness. They tempted the Lord. Murmuring is a sin. It is not just complaining. It is doubting God’s character. It is accusing Him of evil intentions.

Moses’ Cry (Verse 4):

Moses cried out to the Lord. He did not argue with the people. He did not try to defend himself. He brought the problem to God. He said, “What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.” Moses was honest. He was afraid. He was overwhelmed. But he brought his fear to the Lord. He sought God’s help.

The Command (Verse 5-6):

God gave Moses a clear command. Go on before the people. Take the elders with you. Take the rod in your hand. And God promised: “I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb.” God would be there. God would meet him. And Moses was to smite the rock. Water would come out. The people would drink. Provision would come from the rock.

The Rock Smitten:

Moses smote the rock, and water came out. The rock was struck. The water flowed. This is a picture of Christ. The apostle Paul tells us that the rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). Christ was struck for us. He was smitten for our sins. And from His smiting flows the water of life. Living water. Salvation. Provision. Healing. All that we need comes from the smitten Rock.

God’s Presence:

God said, “I will stand before thee there upon the rock.” He did not send an angel. He did not send a messenger. He stood there Himself. He was present. He was there. The source of the water was not just the rock. It was God standing on the rock. The provision came from His presence.

The Rod:

Moses used the same rod he had used in Egypt. It was the rod of authority. The same rod that brought plagues now brought water. The same rod that judged Egypt now provided for Israel. God’s authority is not just for judgment. It is also for provision. His power brings deliverance and blessing.

The Elders Witnessed:

Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. They saw it. They witnessed the miracle. God did not hide His work. He displayed it. He wanted them to see. He wanted them to believe. He wanted them to remember.

Question for the Day:

Are you in a dry place? Have you been complaining instead of crying out to God? Do you know that the smitten Rock is your provision? And will you trust God to provide water from the rock?
