BASIC SCRIPTURE: PROVERBS 2:1-9

BASIC SCRIPTURE: PROVERBS 2:1-9 (KJV)

1. My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

2. So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

3. Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

4. If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

5. Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

6. For the LORD giveth wisdom: and out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

7. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

8. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.

9. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

Key Verse: Proverbs 2:5 — “Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”

If Thou Wilt Receive My Words (Verses 1-4):

Proverbs 2 is a conditional passage. It begins with “if.” There are conditions that must be met. There are actions that must be taken. There is a pursuit that must be made. If you receive God’s words. If you hide His commandments. If you incline your ear. If you apply your heart. If you cry after knowledge. If you lift up your voice. If you seek wisdom as silver. If you search for her as for hidden treasures. These are not passive activities. They are active. They are intentional. They are diligent. They are persistent. They are earnest. They are all-consuming. They are the pursuit of wisdom.

The Heart and the Ear (Verses 2):

Wisdom is received through the ear and the heart. You must incline your ear. You must listen. You must pay attention. You must be ready to hear. You must apply your heart. You must understand. You must reflect. You must ponder. You must internalize. The ear receives the instruction. The heart applies it. Both are necessary. Both are essential. Both are required.

Cry After Knowledge (Verse 3):

Wisdom is not passive. It is not automatic. It is not something that comes without effort. You must cry after it. You must lift up your voice for it. You must desire it. You must hunger for it. You must thirst for it. You must long for it. You must pursue it. You must be desperate for it. Wisdom is not for the casual. It is not for the indifferent. It is for those who seek it with their whole heart.

Seek Her as Silver (Verse 4):

Silver is valuable. Hidden treasures are valuable. You do not find treasure by accident. You do not find treasure without effort. You do not find treasure without searching. You do not find treasure without digging. You do not find treasure without perseverance. You seek it. You search for it. You dig for it. You work for it. You sacrifice for it. You do not give up until you find it. That is the kind of pursuit wisdom requires.

Then Shalt Thou Understand (Verse 5):

When you meet the conditions, the promise follows. Then you will understand the fear of the LORD. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. It is the foundation. It is the starting point. It is the essential ingredient. You cannot have wisdom without the fear of the Lord. And you will find the knowledge of God. You will know Him. You will understand Him. You will experience Him. You will have intimacy with Him. That is the goal of wisdom. It is not just information. It is relationship. It is not just knowledge. It is knowing God.

The LORD Giveth Wisdom (Verse 6):

Wisdom is a gift. It comes from God. It cannot be earned. It cannot be bought. It cannot be manufactured. It is given. It is bestowed. It is granted. The LORD gives wisdom. Out of His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He speaks. He reveals. He teaches. He guides. He gives. All wisdom comes from Him. He is the source. He is the giver. He is the teacher.

Sound Wisdom for the Righteous (Verse 7):

God lays up sound wisdom for the righteous. He stores it up. He reserves it. He keeps it for them. It is not for the wicked. It is not for the proud. It is for the righteous. For those who walk uprightly. For those who live in obedience. For those who fear the Lord. And He is a buckler to them. A shield. A protector. A defender. He guards them. He preserves them. He keeps them safe.

He Keepeth the Paths of Judgment (Verse 8):

God preserves the way of His saints. He keeps their paths. He guides their steps. He guards their ways. He watches over them. He protects them. He leads them in the paths of justice. He leads them in the paths of righteousness. He leads them in the paths of holiness. He leads them in the paths of life. He is their keeper. He is their guide. He is their protector.

Then Shalt Thou Understand (Verse 9):

When you have wisdom, you will understand righteousness, judgment, and equity. You will know what is right. You will know what is just. You will know what is fair. You will know every good path. You will know how to live. You will know how to decide. You will know how to judge. You will know how to act. You will know how to walk. Every good path will be open to you.
