Mark 6:14-29 (KJV)

14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.
18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.
19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:
20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;
22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.
27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,
28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.
29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

PART TWO: REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURE

This passage recounts one of the most tragic events in the New Testament—the beheading of John the Baptist. It is a story of conviction, compromise, vengeance, and the cost of speaking truth to power.

The Characters in the Drama

Herod Antipas – The tetrarch of Galilee, a ruler torn between conviction and compromise. He knew John was “a just man and an holy,” heard him gladly, and even did many things in response to his preaching. Yet he allowed pride and peer pressure to override his conscience.

Herodias – The wife of Herod, driven by vengeance. John had confronted their unlawful marriage, and she nursed a grudge that would not rest until John was dead. Her hatred was patient, strategic, and ultimately deadly.

John the Baptist – The forerunner of Christ, a man of uncompromising truth. He spoke God’s word regardless of the cost. His faithfulness ultimately cost him his life, but his testimony lived on.

The Daughter of Herodias – An instrument of her mother’s vengeance, used to manipulate Herod through dance and seduction.

The Progression of Evil

The Truth Spoken (verse 18)

John’s crime was speaking the truth: “It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.” He did not mince words or soften the message. He confronted sin directly.

The Grudge Nursed (verse 19)

Herodias “had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him.” She did not repent; she plotted. Her hatred grew until it consumed her.

The Conscience Restrained (verse 20)

Herod feared John, knowing he was just and holy. His conscience was active, but not strong enough to overcome his passions and pride. He protected John but could not let him go.

The Opportunity Seized (verses 21-25)

A birthday celebration became the stage for murder. Herod, drunk with power and wine, made a rash vow. The daughter, coached by her mother, requested John’s head.

The Compromise Made (verse 26)

Herod was “exceeding sorry.” His conscience spoke, but his pride shouted louder. “For his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.” Fear of man overrode fear of God.

The Execution Carried Out (verses 27-28)

John, the greatest born of women, died in a dungeon, his head brought on a platter to a dancing girl and her vengeful mother.

The Faithful Remnant (verse 29)

John’s disciples came, took his body, and laid it in a tomb. Even in death, he had followers who honored him.

Lessons from the Tragedy

1. Truth Has a Cost

John paid the ultimate price for speaking truth to power. Jesus Himself said, “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake.”

2. Unrepented Sin Leads to Greater Sin

Herodias’ hatred grew until it demanded murder. Sin unchecked escalates.

3. Conscience Can Be Silenced

Herod’s conscience spoke, but he silenced it with pride and peer pressure. A seared conscience is a dangerous thing.

4. Rash Vows Lead to Regret

Herod’s impulsive oath trapped him into an act he regretted. Words have power.

5. Fear of Man is a Snare

Herod cared more about what his guests thought than what God thought. This misplaced fear cost a life.

6. The Righteous Die, But Their Testimony Lives

John’s voice was silenced, but his testimony continued. Jesus later spoke of him as the greatest of prophets.

PART THREE: PRAYER POINTS

Prayers for Courage to Speak Truth

1. Father, give me the courage of John the Baptist to speak truth regardless of the cost, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord, help me to confront sin with love and boldness, not shrinking back from difficult conversations, in Jesus’ name.

3. Father, let me not be silenced by fear of man or fear of consequences. Let Your truth be on my lips, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for a Sensitive Conscience

1. Lord, keep my conscience sensitive to Your voice. Let me not sear it through repeated disobedience, in Jesus’ name.

2. Father, when my conscience speaks, give me grace to obey. Let me not silence it with pride or compromise, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers Against Grudges and Unforgiveness

1. Father, deliver me from the spirit of Herodias—from nursing grudges and plotting revenge. Give me a forgiving heart, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord, let me not be consumed by hatred or bitterness. Root out every root of unforgiveness from my heart, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for Deliverance from Rash Words

1. Father, guard my mouth from rash vows and impulsive promises. Let me think before I speak, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord, deliver me from words spoken in excitement or pressure that I will later regret, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers Against Fear of Man

1. Father, deliver me from the fear of man that brings a snare. Let me fear You alone, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord, help me to care more about what You think than what others think. Let Your approval be my highest aim, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for Faithful Remnants

1. Father, raise up faithful disciples who will honor Your servants even in death. Let me be one who stands with the faithful, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers for Those Persecuted for Truth

1. Lord, strengthen every believer facing persecution for speaking truth. Let them stand firm like John, in Jesus’ name.

2. Father, let the blood of martyrs be the seed of the church. Let their testimony bear fruit long after they are gone, in Jesus’ name.

Father, I thank You for the testimony of John the Baptist—a man who spoke truth regardless of the cost. Give me that same courage.

Lord, keep my conscience sensitive to Your voice. When You speak, let me obey. Let me not silence Your voice with pride, compromise, or fear of man.

Deliver me from the spirit of Herodias. Root out every grudge, every bitterness, every desire for revenge from my heart. Give me a forgiving spirit.

Guard my mouth from rash words. Help me to think before I speak and to make vows I can keep.
