BASIC SCRIPTURE: 1 TIMOTHY 6:1-6 (KJV)

1. Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

2. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

3. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

4. He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

5. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

6. But godliness with contentment is great gain.

The Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12):

Jesus gives what is known as the Golden Rule. It is not just a good suggestion. It is a foundational principle. It is the heart of the law and the prophets. It is the summary of all moral teaching. It is the test of true love. It is the standard of righteous living. It calls us to treat others as we want to be treated. Not as we have been treated. Not as they deserve to be treated. As we would want to be treated. It calls us to be proactive. It calls us to be intentional. It calls us to be loving. It calls us to be generous. It calls us to be kind. It calls us to be forgiving. It calls us to be merciful. It is a reflection of God’s character. He treats us with love, grace, mercy, and kindness. We are to treat others the same way.

Servants and Masters (1 Timothy 6:1-2):

Paul addresses servants. They are under the yoke. They are in a position of submission. They are to count their masters worthy of all honour. They are to respect them. They are to serve them faithfully. They are to honour them. Why? So that the name of God and His doctrine be not blasphemed. A servant who dishonours his master brings dishonour to God. A servant who rebels against authority brings reproach on the gospel. Paul extends the principle to believing masters. Servants should not despise them because they are brethren. They are not to take advantage of the relationship. They are not to disrespect them. They are to serve them even more. Because they are faithful and beloved. Because they are partakers of the benefit. The gospel is to be lived out in every relationship. It is to be demonstrated in every situation.

Wholesome Words (Verse 3):

Paul warns against those who teach otherwise. Those who do not consent to wholesome words. The words of our Lord Jesus Christ. The doctrine which is according to godliness. There is a standard. There is a truth. There is a doctrine. It is wholesome. It is sound. It is healthy. It promotes godliness. It leads to righteousness. It produces holiness. Those who teach otherwise are to be identified. They are to be avoided. They are not to be followed.

The Marks of False Teachers (Verses 4-5):

Paul describes false teachers. They are proud. They are arrogant. They are conceited. They know nothing. They do not know the truth. They do not understand the gospel. They do not have wisdom. They dote about questions and strifes of words. They are obsessed with unimportant matters. They argue about words. They create controversies. They stir up questions. And from these come envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings. They are envious. They are contentious. They are abusive. They are suspicious. They are corrupt in mind. They are destitute of the truth. They think that gain is godliness. They think religion is a means of profit. They think the gospel is a way to get rich. They are false teachers. They are to be withdrawn from. They are to be avoided. They are not to be followed. They are not to be imitated.

Godliness with Contentment (Verse 6):

Paul contrasts the false teachers with the true believer. Godliness with contentment is great gain. Not godliness without contentment. Not contentment without godliness. Both together. Godliness is the life of faith. It is the life of holiness. It is the life of obedience. It is the life of devotion. Contentment is the attitude of satisfaction. It is being content with what God has given. It is not coveting. It is not grasping. It is not striving. It is not complaining. It is not demanding. It is accepting. It is trusting. It is resting. It is being satisfied in God. Godliness with contentment is great gain. It is not a small gain. It is great gain. It is eternal gain. It is spiritual gain. It is the best gain. It is the only gain that matters.
