BASIC SCRIPTURE: LUKE 22: 25 – 34

BASIC SCRIPTURE: FRIDAY, 9TH OCTOBER 2026 — LUKE 22:25-34 (KJV)

  1. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

  2. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

  3. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

  4. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.

  5. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

  6. That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

  7. And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

  8. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

  9. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

  10. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION — FRIDAY, 9TH OCTOBER 2026

Key Verse: Luke 22:32 — “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”

The Gentile Model of Leadership (Verse 25):

Jesus describes the leadership model of the world. The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over their subjects. They dominate. They control. They rule with force. They are called benefactors — a title of honour, but often empty. They exercise authority. They demand obedience. They expect service. This is the world’s way. This is the pattern of fallen humanity. Power is used to control. Authority is used to dominate. Position is used to elevate self.

The Kingdom Model of Leadership (Verses 26-27):

But Jesus says, “Ye shall not be so.” The kingdom model is different. It is upside down. It is counter-cultural. It is revolutionary. The greatest among you must be as the younger. The chief must be as the servant. Leadership is not about being served. It is about serving. Leadership is not about being first. It is about being last. Leadership is not about receiving. It is about giving. Jesus gives the ultimate example. He is the Master. He is the Lord. He is the King. But He is among them as one who serves. He did not come to be served. He came to serve. He did not come to be ministered unto. He came to minister. He did not come to take. He came to give. He did not come to rule. He came to save.

The Reward of Faithfulness (Verses 28-30):

Jesus acknowledges the faithfulness of His disciples. They have continued with Him in His temptations. They have not abandoned Him. They have not turned back. They have not given up. And because of their faithfulness, He appoints unto them a kingdom. As the Father appointed unto Him, He appoints unto them. They will eat and drink at His table in His kingdom. They will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. This is the reward of faithfulness. This is the honour of those who endure. This is the glory of those who remain.

Satan’s Desire (Verse 31):

Jesus turns to Simon Peter. He gives him a solemn warning. “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.” Satan wants to sift Peter. He wants to test him. He wants to try him. He wants to shake him. He wants to expose him. He wants to destroy him. Sifting is a violent process. It separates the wheat from the chaff. It shakes. It tosses. It beats. It bruises. It is painful. It is intense. It is exhausting. Peter would be sifted. Peter would be tested. Peter would be tried. Peter would be shaken to his core. But sifting is not just destruction. It is also purification. It removes what is not needed. It separates what is false from what is true. It exposes the weakness. It strengthens the faith.

Jesus Prays for Peter (Verse 32):

Jesus tells Peter that He has prayed for him. He has interceded. He has petitioned. He has pleaded. He has prayed specifically for Peter. And His prayer is specific: “that thy faith fail not.” Not that he would not be sifted. Not that he would not fall. Not that he would not fail. But that his faith would not fail. He would stumble. He would fall. He would deny. But his faith would not be destroyed. His faith would not be extinguished. His faith would not be lost. And when he is converted, when he is restored, when he is turned back, he is to strengthen his brethren. His failure would not be the end. It would be the beginning of a greater ministry. His failure would prepare him to help others who fail. His weakness would become his strength. His fall would become his testimony. His denial would become his message.

Peter’s Boast and Jesus’ Prophecy (Verses 33-34):

Peter responds with confidence. He declares, “Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.” Peter is sincere. Peter is passionate. Peter is devoted. Peter is loyal. Peter means what he says. But Peter is overconfident. He overestimates his strength. He underestimates the power of temptation. He does not know his own weakness. Jesus tells him the truth. “I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.” Peter would not die with Jesus. Peter would deny Him. Not once. Not twice. Three times. Before the sun rose. Before the cock crowed. The boldest disciple would fall. The loudest promise would be broken. The strongest confession would become the darkest denial.

The Lesson for Us:

We are not as strong as we think we are. We are not as faithful as we believe. We are not as bold as we claim. We all have our breaking point. We all have our weaknesses. We all have our fears. Do not trust in your own strength. Do not boast in your own faithfulness. Do not presume upon your own devotion. But also, do not despair when you fall. Jesus prays for you. He intercedes for you. He petitions for you. Your faith will not fail. You will be restored. You will be converted. And when you are restored, use your experience to strengthen others. Serve them. Encourage them. Pray for them. Help them. That is the mark of true leadership. That is the heart of a servant.

Question for the Day — Friday, 9th October 2026:

Do you lead by serving, or do you serve by leading? Do you dominate or do you serve? Do you trust in your own strength, or do you trust in Jesus? And when you are restored after failure, do you strengthen your brethren?
