1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.
11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
14 And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.
19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

Commentary on the Basic Scripture
Acts 12:1-19 is one of the most dramatic accounts of divine deliverance in all of Scripture. It presents a stark contrast between the power of earthly rulers and the power of prayer. The chapter opens with Herod the king – likely Herod Agrippa I – stretching forth his hands to vex (afflict, harass, harm) certain members of the early church. He kills James the brother of John with the sword. James becomes the first apostle to be martyred. And when Herod sees that this pleases the Jews, he proceeds further to take Peter also. The timing is significant: it is the days of unleavened bread, one of the most sacred periods in the Jewish calendar. Herod is not just making a political move; he is making a religious statement.
Peter is apprehended, thrown into prison, and delivered to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him. A quaternion is a squad of four soldiers; four quaternions means sixteen soldiers, rotating in shifts of four every six hours. Peter is bound with two chains, sleeping between two soldiers, with additional guards keeping watch before the door. In human terms, escape is impossible. Execution is scheduled to happen after Easter (Passover). Peter’s death seems certain.
But verse 5 gives the turning point: “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” While Herod uses political power, the church uses prayer power. While soldiers guard the door, believers guard the prayer meeting. While chains bind Peter’s hands, prayer binds the attention of heaven. The phrase “without ceasing” means earnest, intense, persistent prayer – not casual, not occasional, but desperate and continual.
Then comes the night of deliverance. The same night when Herod would have brought him forth, Peter is sleeping. Not pacing. Not panicking. Sleeping. So deep is his peace that the angel of the Lord must smite him on the side to wake him up. A light shines in the prison. The angel commands: “Arise up quickly.” And instantly, the chains fall off from his hands. Not loosened – fallen off. The angel then gives specific instructions: gird thyself (get dressed), bind on thy sandals, cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. Peter obeys, not fully realizing it is actually happening – he thinks he is seeing a vision.
They pass the first and second ward – levels of security – and come to the iron gate that leadeth unto the city. This is the final obstacle: a gate made of iron, locked and guarded. But the gate opens “of his own accord” – by itself, without human intervention. They walk out, pass through one street, and the angel departs. Only then does Peter come to himself and realize: “Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.”
Peter goes to the house of Mary, where many were gathered together praying. And here is one of the most humorous and human moments in Scripture: a damsel named Rhoda comes to answer the knock, recognizes Peter’s voice, and is so overjoyed that she leaves him standing outside while she runs inside to announce his arrival. The praying believers respond not with faith but with disbelief: “Thou art mad.” When she constantly affirms it, they say, “It is his angel” – as if Peter’s ghost or guardian angel is at the door. Meanwhile, Peter continues knocking. When they finally open the door and see him, they are astonished. They had been praying for his deliverance, yet they could not believe when deliverance actually arrived.
The chapter ends with Herod finding Peter gone, examining the keepers, commanding their execution, and then going down to Caesarea. The enemy is frustrated. The church is amazed. And Peter is free.
For the believer today, Acts 12 teaches several critical lessons: First, prayer made without ceasing has power over prison doors. Second, chains do fall off when heaven intervenes. Third, iron gates open of their own accord when God sends His angel. Fourth, sometimes believers pray for miracles but struggle to believe when the miracle arrives. Fifth, while the enemy expects your death, God is planning your deliverance.
