12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Commentary on the Basic Scriptures
Exodus 3:11-15 captures one of the most profound moments in Scripture: Moses standing before the burning bush, confronted by the presence of God, and receiving an impossible assignment. “Go to Pharaoh. Bring My people out of Egypt.” Moses’ first response is not faith but fear: “Who am I?” It is the cry of inadequacy that every believer knows. But God does not answer Moses’ question about who Moses is. Instead, God answers with who He is: “I AM WHO I AM.”
This is the divine name – Yahweh, the self-existent, eternal, unchanging God. He is not “I was” or “I will be.” He is I AM – present, available, and sufficient for whatever challenge stands before you. When God sends you, He does not send you alone. His presence is your credential. His name is your authority. Moses’ inadequacy was never the issue; God’s sufficiency was always the answer.
Jeremiah 29:10-11 speaks to a people in exile. They are in Babylon – not by accident but by judgment. For seventy years, they have been displaced, discouraged, and seemingly forgotten. Then God speaks: “After seventy years are completed, I will visit you.” There is a set time for deliverance. God is never late. He knows exactly when the captivity must end. And in the waiting, He gives them – and us – one of the most quoted promises in Scripture: “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
The word “thoughts” here is the Hebrew word “machashabah” – plans, purposes, designs. God has not just random good feelings about you. He has a blueprint. A design. A purpose. And it is not for your harm – it is for peace (shalom – wholeness, completeness, well-being). It is for a future (a long and prosperous end) and a hope (a confident expectation of good).
Together, these two scriptures form a powerful tension and resolution: Exodus 3 says, “I AM WHO I AM sends you – and My presence is enough.” Jeremiah 29 says, “I have a plan for your future – and it is good.” The combination is a declaration for anyone who feels inadequate (like Moses) or exiled (like Israel). God’s presence qualifies you. God’s plan secures you.
